Hello Ruth,

GJ> Did you ever get hit with a really big blow? I'm sure it would be a
 GJ> terrifying experience.
RH> No but we've had several scares. When we were in San Angelo, TX
RH> (spring of 84) we figure a tornado went over the mobile home we were
RH> living in but touched down elsewhere. We've been on the edge of some
RH> big storms but not gone thru one which is a surprise seeing that we've

 GJ> Keep up your church-going! (g)

RH> We intend to! We've also got a couple of cases of MREs just in case
RH> we need them. Not gourmet food but it's something to eat.

Since the 1973 Cyclone Tracy which wiped out half of Darwin, everyone
there keeps a cyclone stock of food, water, batteries and a radio in
their "strong room", where the family can sit out a Cat 5. Houses
these days are designed to withstand Cat 4, but with one room - usually
a bathroom or similar in the middle of the house - which will provide
shelter for the occupants if all the rest of the house is blown away.

RH> about 6" on post; January 97 one gave us about 10" and closed the
RH> interstate 30 miles north of us from a couple of miles to the west to
GJ> I suppose that amount of snow would be upsetting for Southerners, but
GJ> would be more or less ignored by people from the frigid North. :)

RH> The north has snow plows and other removal equipment; it's just about
RH> non exsistant in the south. In March of 1980, we were living on the

Although I have not experienced a snow storm, when visiting Northern
USA I have noticed that there are ways in which houses etc are designed
to make it simpler to cope with deep snow. Items such as coloured
poles attached to fire hydrants to show their location when covered by
deep snow, so that snow plows can avoid them, show clever thinking.
Lack of front fences to houses allow plows to push snow off the roads
onto front gardens.

GJ> Yes, I have had the lemon meringue (I had to look it up) pie.
GJ> Something like the lime you describe would be excellent.

RH> A good one is excellent; a poor imitation is't worth the money.

One of my friends has been making lime marmalade, which he says is
excellent. I hope to try that later; it should be good.

RH> You may get this show in a few years then. It was interesting to see
RH> how well he adapted to using something so completly unfamiliar--and
RH> doing a creditable job of it against somebody who cooked in that style
 RH> on a regular basis.

GJ> Of course it helps to have a team of kitchen hands to do the
GJ> labour-intensive parts of the preparation, but the participants
GJ> certainly appear to be very skillful and innovative.
RH> Very much so! Steve was wondering how much advance notice the
RH> challenger chefs get before coming on to the show and if they've any
RH> idea of what the "secret" ingredinet is supposed to be. Some seem to
RH> have a bit of foresight as they bring kitchen tools and plating things
RH> that would be appropriate to that show's secret ingredient but not
 RH> others.

One is always suspicious of TV shows where there is an apparent
"surprise!" element. The "Iron Chef" does appear to provide a very
comprehensive range of ingredients, and the participants obviously know
what is available, as there is no time wasted hunting around looking
for the truffles and foie gras.
