When I was in high school I happened to go to "THE" high school (of 3 
public high schools). Many of the parents were of the country club set, 
very few were considered "blue collar" and it was considered a "rich 
student body". Most senior classes put on a prom featuring a major 
touring band, at one of the (three) prominent hotel's ballroom. They did 
this by industriously holding fund raisers, etc. from the time they were 
freshmen.

Time comes for my class to make plans for our Prom and the school 
administration decrees that the Prom must be held first week of May, at 
the school's old jock-strap smelly gym, and must use a local band for 
the music. The class president (who was, overall, a snobbish ass) got 
wind that the assistant principal had hatched this deal so that the 
class would not blow the treasury on prom and the school's activity fund 
would reap the leftover $$$.

So, the class officers hired a local four piece garage band ($50 for a 
four hour gig to give you an idea of their quality - even in 1960) spent 
about $22.50 on red and black crepe paper streamers and another three 
bucks on Scotch tape to hold up the streamers. Then donated the rest of 
the treasury to St. Jude's Children's Hospital which was then in 
construction.

Then a consortium of the higher income parents got together and 
sponsored a visit from the Ralph Martierie Orchestra at the St. Nicholas 
Hotel Ballroom - On June 10. The Friday AFTER graduation.

The "official" prom had more faculty chaperones in attendance than 
students. The after school was out "invitational" event was very well 
attended, indeed. And the school administration could only grind their 
molars and be hot under the collar.

The were really hot under the collar when some of the graduated class 
who were not attending the "invite" went up the school's smokestack and 
painted "THE LAST LAUGH" in _BIG_ letters that could be seen far and 
wide. These were sandblasted away before classes resumed in September.

1961's Prom was pretty much a repeat of 1960 ... including painting the 
chimney with "LAUGH AGAIN". This stayed on the stack until it was torn

      Title: Mrs. Tooler Doolus' Oven Spaghetti
 Categories: Pasta, Sauces
      Yield: 6 servings
 
      1 lb Ground meat
      2 lg Green bell peppers; sliced
      1 cn Tomato sauce
      1 md Onion; chopped
      2 tb Veggie oil; if needed
      2    Eggs; beaten
      2 c  Corn kernels
      1 cn Stewed, crushed tomatoes
      1 cn Ripe olives; pitted
     12 oz Spaghetti; cooked
    1/2 c  Ritz cracker crumbs
           Salt & Black pepper
           Butter
 
  Fry the ground meat until brown. Add the green peppers, onions
  and the oil (if using) and cook until limp. Take off the fire
  and add the eggs. Then add the corn, tomatoes and olives and
  mix well. Add to the spaghetti and pour into a big baking dish,
  
  Sprinkle on the cracker crumbs and pat with butter. In a 375oF
  oven, bake for 40 minutes.
