If you read for pleasure at all - you should look up some of his works. 
Like Louis Lamour his accounts are historically and geographically 
accurate - and it's nip & tuck as to who is the better story teller. I 
think probably, Kelton. If only because his books cover a wider range of 
history - and his heroes do not always win.

      Title: Brochettes Of Figs With Spicy Meatballs & Dipping Sauce
 Categories: Pork, Chilies, Fruit
      Yield: 3 servings
 
      2    Serrano chilies
    1/2 lb Bulk pork or turkey sausage
      1 cl Garlic; minced
      1 ts Ground cumin
    1/4 c  Minced fresh basil
    1/4 c  Minced fresh cilantro
      1    Egg
      2 tb Breadcrumbs
    3/4 c  Plain yogurt
      1 ts Lemon juice
    1/2 ts Freshly ground pepper
     12    Very ripe Black Mission
           -figs
 
  The figs, which should be very soft and ripe, stretch their skins taut
  as they char and crisp on the grill, while their sweet interior
  becomes hot and jammy. From Chronicle contributor Georgeanne Brennan.
  
  Halve the chiles lengthwise. For a milder meatball, remove the seeds
  and veins before mincing. Mince the chiles and combine them with the
  sausage, garlic, cumin, 2 tablespoons each of the basil and cilantro,
  the egg and the breadcrumbs in a bowl. Mix well and shape into balls
  about 1 inch in diameter. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  
  Make the dip by combining the yogurt, lemon juice and pepper with the
  remaining basil and cilantro. Cover and refrigerate until ready to
  serve.
  
  Build a charcoal or wood fire in a grill. While the grill is heating,
  thread 3 figs and 3 meatballs onto each of 4 skewers, pressing the
  meat tightly around the skewers. When the fire is medium-hot, grill
  the skewers for about 5 minutes. Turn them carefully and grill
  another 4 or 5 minutes, or until the meat is cooked through and
  browned, and the figs are charred.
  
  Serves 4 as an appetizer, 2 as a main dish
  
  Note: Both the meatballs and the sauce may be made the day before.
