Ärende: Zone Alarm
==================
On 05-16-07 DAVE SACERDOTE Scribbled to MICHAEL LOO about Zone Alarm

DS>ML> Let's see. It monitors keystrokes, slowing things down. It
DS>ML> updates itself despite my telling it not to do so without my
DS>ML> permission - so that at its appointed time, it starts going
DS>ML> even when I'm on dialup, which is a huge annoyance. It eats
DS>ML> resources all the time. It crashed this computer so many
DS>ML> times I can't keep track - fifty times at least.

DS>I have no idea what program you are actually using, but I've been
DS>using the FREE version (not the subscription one) of Zone Alarm
DS>since 1994 without a bit of a problem. It doesn't monitor
DS>keystrokes, it only blocks unauthorized inbound and outbound
DS>traffic to/from your PC. It sounds like you may not have it
DS>configured properly.

My experience with ZA pretty much parallels yours - not Michael's. Once
I told it to not joggle my elbone every time some unauthorised outside
source sniffed one of my ports. Just block them and leave me alone about
it, Bv)=

DS>Or, you could be actually speaking about Norton Anti-virus, which
DS>is indeed such a resource hog that I will probably not be renewing
DS>my own subscription. I feel a little melancholy about that, because
DS>I have been using some kind of Norton product since the very first
DS>Norton Utilities 1.0 when Peter Norton stood guard on the box cover
DS>with his arms crossed geekily and wearing a stern expression on his
DS>wusslike face.

Back in the wood-fired, steam powered, belt drive days when pure DOS
boxes couldn't really get virii - I had Norton Commander which was a
work-alike file manipulation utility (much along the lines, but better
than, Windows Explorer) that was reminiscent to the file utilities
available to me on the Amiga. I got in a knot one day and couldn't
figure out from the documentation a recovery method ... so, I called the
support line (this is well before Micro$not co-opted Symantec) and this
cherry voice says "Tech support, Peter speaking ... "

I really miss those days, when the guy who owned the company actually
knew how it worked. One of the reasons I prefer shareware to Corp Rat
Warez.

Title: Tomato, Avocado & Asian Pear Salsa With Pan-Seared Fish
 Categories: Seafood, Fruit, Salsa
      Yield: 4 servings

    1/2 c Small halved cherry
           -tomatoes
    1/2 c Medium-dice Asian pear
    1/2 tb Minced shallot
           -Juice of 1/2 lemon, plus
           -lemon juice as needed
           -Kosher salt and pepper to
           -taste
1 1/2 lb Mild, white boneless,
           -skinless fish filets like
           -tilapia, trout or catfish
           -All-purpose flour for
           -dredging
           -Vegetable oil
           -Chopped parsley for garnish
           -(optional)

This simple salsa is a nice fall transition because it uses the last
of the summer's cherry tomatoes and the Asian pears coming into the
market now. The salsa also goes well with grilled chicken and pork.

Mix the avocado with the tomatoes, pear and shallot in a bowl. Add
lemon juice to taste; more may be needed if the pear is very ripe and
sweet. Season with salt and pepper just before serving.

Heat a skillet large enough to hold the filets over medium-high heat.
Season the fish with salt and pepper, then dredge in flour, shaking
  off the excess.

Add just enough oil to the skillet to coat the bottom. When the oil is
very hot (you'll see gentle ripples in it), carefully add the filets
skinned-side up. Fry until brown and crispy, then turn and finish
cooking, about 5-7 minutes per inch of thickness.

Serve the salsa on top or to the side of the filets. Garnish with
  parsley, if desired.

  Serves 4
