Actually, in one of my carryons I had a pair of shoe shoes, so I
could retreat to a restaurant when I was tired of mosquitoes,
leeches, and other wildlife. Dungeness, Washington, strangely, is
within two hours' drive of one of the two (three? I lost my notes)
temperate rain forests in the world. Our trip to Dungeness Spit was
the last exertionous part of a month out, so I was perfectly happy
to get rid of the boots, which looked pretty irreparable.

Not sure: they sort of occupy a similar niche, but that doesn't
prevent a sort of uneasy coexistence.

Yep, one block of North Braeswood, not far from the intersection
with Buffalo Speedway. Speaking of which, I wonder about the names:
Braeswood does in fact straddle the "drainage ditch," whose name is
Brays Bayou (note spelling), and Buffalo Speedway may be one of
the most horrid stop-and-go roads I've ever been on (it is surely
the most horrid stop-and-go road I've ever driven on).

Ah, the zoo. I have fond memories of high-school pseudo-romance in
those parts.

Tres leches cake
cat: dessert
serves: 12

h - cake
9 eggs, separated
1 1/2 c sugar
6 oz butter
2 c flour
1/2 Tb baking powder
1 c milk
1 ts vanilla
1 ts cream of tartar
h - three milks
2 c heavy cream
5 oz evaporated milk
14 oz sweetened condensed milk
h - cream icing
2 c heavy cream
1/3 c sugar

Cake:
Oven at 350F. All ingredients at room temperature.

Cream butter with sugar until fluffy and pale yellow.
Beat eggs in. Beat until fluffy again.

In second bowl combine flour and baking powder.

In third bowl combine milk and vanilla.

Alternatively add flour and milk in batches to butter-egg mixture.
Beat until smooth after each addition.

Beat egg whites with cream of tartar to soft peaks. Fold into
batter and pour into greased 13x9" metal pan. Bake 25 min or
until golden. Let cool. May be baked 20 min in 11.5 x 17.5"
sheet pan.

Milks:
Stir together. Do not beat.

Icing:
Whip together until stiff.

Assembly:
When cake is cool, slice or peel off top crust. Ice sides, creating
a small lip on top to catch milk mixture. Pour milk mixture evenly
over cake: you will probably need only 3/4 of mixture. Refrigerate
before serving.

If using sheet pan, cut in half; soak first layer, place second layer
on top, and proceed as above.
