So what? A command prompt is a guarantee of nothing at all, it certainly
isn't a guarantee that any given DOS program will run. From what I've read,
quite a high proportion of Dos program do run into all sorts of problems
with vista. The problems as you suggest involve IO and extended memory. If
you never want to print from meal master, and if none of your Fido specific
programs want to access the serial ports, then you may be alright - as long
as nothing uses extended memory.

I was panicking in all directions recently because my current box was
crashing at every turn. Turned out to be a combination of dust in the CPU
cooling radiator and a faulty CPU cooling fan, causing overheating.

However, that's why I was considering what I'd have to give up if I wanted
to use Vista. And the answer I came up with was "too much". So if and/or
when I get a new machine, the first thing I'm going to do is to insist that
it comes without an operating system, and the second is to install XP Pro on
it - myself. I have to say - I think I've said this before - that XP is the
first O/S from Microsoft that I estimate as being worthy of the name - that
said. I've not "met" 2k. I'll not say I've never had problems with it, but
it's the _only_ one of their offerings I've not had to reinstall at least
twice a year.

I suspect, what's more, that I'll be installing a properly conceived dual
boot machine, with two HDs one of which runs XP and the other with (probably
Ubuntu) Linux. I'm told that the nerds creating Linux apps have grown up to
the extent that they even write decent help files now. Dos programs work
very well under DOSEMU and many windows apps run under Wine. My idea is to
gradually migrate towards Linux. I tried this about 3 years a go when I got
this box, but too many Linux apps were still in the nerdsery.
