Ärende: Water Bombs
===================
On 07-12-07 MANNY ROTHSTEIN Scribbled to DAVE DRUM about Water Bombs

MR>-> GJ> DD> I have lived in the Lost Angeleeze basin (and in Lost
MR>-> GJ> DD> Angeleeze its own self) and I can certainly attest that
MR>-> GJ> DD> there are very valid reasons that Arrowhead water company
MR>-> GJ> DD> makes a young fortune off of bottled water for drinking
MR>-> GJ> DD> and making coffee/tea.

MR>-> GJ>Don't they have rain-water tanks for that?

MR>-> It rains very little in the LA basin - except during the 8 week
MR>-> period from mid-October to mid-December. Or that was what I
MR>-> experienced in the  1960s.

MR>The current rainy season is Dec. to Apr., with the bulk of the rain,
MR>such as it may be, coming between Jan. and Mar. Most of our annual
MR>rain comes from storms out of the gulf of Alaska, the same as Hap's,
MR>but most of them don't make it this far south due to the Jet Stream
MR>usually parking itself just north of Southern California. It can be
MR>rainy any day of the year, but those unseasonably showers are rare.

And they say that global warming doesn't affect the climate. Bv(=

MR>Drinking water comes from a variety of sources. The Sacramento Delta,
MR>the Owens Valley, the Colorado River (which LA shares with Arizona),
MR>rain reservoirs and wells make up the bulk of it. Drinking water
MR>quality varies widely depending on the source. Colorado River water
MR>being the worst (look up the Salton Sea). I live in Huntington Beach
MR>which is about 35 miles south of LA. Our water is usually good
MR>because it comes from local wells. There are desalinization plants
MR>on the drawing boards for Huntington Beach and San Diego. Apparently,
MR>it is now cost effective to process sea water into drinking water by
MR>using the waste heat and infrastructure of existing coastal power
MR>plants.

When I lived in Inglewood the water was horrid. Nearly as bad as where I
lived north of the LA Collisseum. By the time I moved to Redondo Beach I
was firmly in the habit of getting on a first name basis with my
Arrowhead-Puritas driver. I wonder what the rich-bitches up at Palos
Verdes do for water? Perrier on tap, probably.

      Title: Zuni-Inspired Stew Of Lamb, Hominy & Pumpkin
 Categories: Lamb/mutton, Vegetables, Stews, Squash, Chilies
      Yield: 5 servings

      1 lg Mild green chile
      2    Green bell peppers
      2    Onions; coarse chopped
      5 cl Garlic; coarse chopped
      2 tb Vegetable oil
      1 ts Oregano
  1 1/2 ts Cumin
    1/2    Green jalapeno; chopped
      1 lb Boneless lamb shoulder;
           - in cubes
           Flour for dredging
      3 c  Beef broth
    1/4 lb Pumpkin or other winter
           -squash; peeled, in
           -bite-size pieces
      1 tb Mild, pure chile powder
           - (ancho or pasilla)
      3 c  Cooked, drained hominy
    1/4 c  Chopped cilantro

  Serve this hearty stew with a loaf of country-style bread (such as
  pain levain), goat cheese and a mesclun salad studded with herbs. From
  Marlena Spieler.

  Roast the mild chile and bell peppers over a gas burner or on a
  barbecue grill until they are charred evenly. Place in a plastic bag,
  seal and set aside until cool enough to handle. Peel, stem and seed
  the peppers (save any juices) then cut into strips and set aside.

  Lightly saute the onions and garlic in the oil until the onions are
  softened, then sprinkle in the oregano and cumin (and add the jalapeno
  if using); cook a few moments longer. Add the meat and cook, turning,
  until browned on all sides, then sprinkle in the flour and let cook
  to a golden color.

  Add half of the reserved roasted peppers, the broth, pumpkin and half
  of the chile powder. Simmer over low heat or in a 325-degree oven
  until the lamb is very tender, about 2 hours.

  Add the hominy, the remaining chile powder and chiles, and the
  cilantro; simmer just long enough to heat through.

  Serves 4 to 6
