Contra vegetarianism.

1. I've been railing about the evils of the octopodal Whole Foods
conglomerate for some time now. I see that John Mackey, its CEO,
has been going on some online food fora and bashing the competing
Wild Oats chain (which, truth to tell, is relatively nasty),
hiding behind the handle "rahodeb." He would spread rumors about
Wild Oats and say that it wasn't worth investing in, while
extolling the virtues of his own company. Now it's come up that
Whole Foods is trying to buy Wild Oats after all, and the
regulators are looking into this as not just the case of another
lying sack of cack executive but as a possible attempt to
engineer the stock price of Wild Oats so he could get a bargain.
Ha ha. Hope he goes to jail.

2. Salmonella outbreak at the Taste of Chicago, the culprit
being a hummus and cucumber plate from a Persian restaurant.
I figure if you go to the Taste of Chicago and get a hummus
and cucumber plate, you deserve whatever you get.

3. Snack food Salmonella outbreak, the culprit a not-so-nice
vegetarian product called Veggie Booty. I remember trying the
stuff once: it grepped me (this was years ago, so I can't
claim Salmonella), and worse, it tasted like a mixture of
grass clippings and styrofoam. I figure if you eat enough of
this stuff to get exposed to Salmonella, you deserve whatever
you get.

LAVERBREAD & PANTYSGAWN QUICHE
cat: Welsh, starter
servings: 6

500 g short crust pastry filling
3 lg eggs
500 ml milk
100 g Pantysgawn soft goat cheese
100 g laverbread
100 g lightly cooked chopped leek (or spring onion)
1 to 2 sprigs parsley chopped, or coriander, tarragon etc
generous seasoning

Heat oven to 150C, 350F, gas mk 4.

Roll out pastry and line 1 large or 2 medium flan cases, or make 40 - 50
"mince pie" size.

Mix eggs, cheese, milk and laverbread in a bowl (or liquidiser) until well
blended. Add leeks and herbs and mix in well. Season generously, then fill
the flan cases three quarters full and bake in oven on a heated tray for
15 - 20 minutes, depending on thickness, until the mixture is set and the
flan golden on top. Serve hot, warm or cold.

This can be varied by adding other vegetables as artichokes, courgettes,
sun dried tomato etc to expand the colours and flavours. Diced cooked
bacon or ham, strips of prosciutto or Carmarthen ham, diced smoked salmon,
flaked cooked salmon, cod or other fresh or smoked fish are among many
possible variations on the theme.
