 ML> I'm interested. So what constitutes a read/write cycle - one
ML> access? That's not so good, although so far as I do backups
ML> onto one every month or so, the thing will outlast this
ML> demon-possessed computer by far. What about a USB drive that uses
 ML> more robust technology?
SD> IIRC, a single access is considered a R/W cycle.

The question here relates to all the kids who store their
music on them (or used to) - that use puts bunches of strain
on the hardware; does this mean that such a drive in such a
use would last mere months to maybe a year?

SD> It depends on the chip they use; there's two types (and I can't
SD> remember the acronyms). Unfortunately, 4GB and below use the cheaper
SD> chips, IIRC. Their "charge" lasts about five years (that's assuming
 SD> they're used once).

So I have this 4GB one that I've been using to transfer stuff
(such as the FIDO mail) between the Averatec (which can't do
certain things) and the old Sony (which is fine if it stays in
its docking station and isn't moved, which makes it kind of
useless to me, so it has become the desktop at my father's house).
Do I have to be careful about it five years hence, even if I don't
make it cycle 2000x a year ?

SD> Well, this system that I'm running for the BBS has six USB ports (I
 SD> believe USB2).

The Sony has one old port (the SanDisk works better on it than on the
new box, but the transfer is about 80-90% slower), while the Averatec
has three USB2s all in a row (so effectively only two can be used
at once).

SD> I use USB so little (maybe once every two to three months) that it's
SD> really not worth it. Besides, my ultra-wide SCSI tape has a lot faster
SD> bandwidth than USB does for what I need. To go into it would be overly
SD> technical and I've probably overstepped my boundries with this
 SD> discussion anyway!

USB has been a sort of lifeline between the two half-computers for me.

==
SD> I've been looking around and IIRC, you do have a bit of a background
 SD> in library science.

Cataloguing, to be precise. I'm not doing that these days,
other concerns taking up my attention.

ML> Why art history, by the way?
SD> She likes art and she likes history. Probably a good combo for her.

I've always been for doing something you like. But we both know
why she needs a trust fund for her education!

3 tb Chick peas 1 ea Bay leaf
      7 c Stock 1/8 ts Asafetida
1 ts Turmeric 1/4 ts Cayenne
1 tb Coriander 1/2 ts Garam masala
1 tb Shredded ginger root 2 tb Chopped coriander
      3 tb Ghee

Sort & wash the legumes. Combine in a bowl & soak in hot water for 1 hour.
  Drain.

Combine the legumes with the stock, turmeric, coriander, ginger root & 1 tb
of the ghee in a large pot. Bring to a boil & simmer covered for 1 1/2
  hours. Stir occasionally.

Remove the pot from the heat, add the salt & beat with a whisk till the
soup is quite smooth. Add the coarsely chopped spinach & cook gently for
  10 minutes.

Heat the remaining ghee. When hot, add the cumin & chilies. Fry for 20
seconds then add the bay leaf, asafetida & cayenne. A few seconds later,
add 3 tb water. Cook for a minute or so & then pour into the soup.
Sprinkle in the garam masala & coriander & serve.
