Ärende: Music Storage
=====================
On 07-26-07 MICHAEL LOO Scribbled to DAVE SACERDOTE about technological

ML> DS> Maryanne is so tehnologically innocent that she sometimes has
ML> DS> trouble using her cell phone. Lynn prefers having a bonus 40
ML> DS> gigs of storage for her music files.

ML>How much music does that mean these days? Used to be a meg a minute
ML>for reasonably high-res sound files, which would mean 600 or so CDs'
ML>worth of stuff, if my math in the head is working. I wonder if the
ML>space requirements have changed, upward for greater fidelity or
ML>downward for better compression, or if they have remained stable.

I stream my little "JAZZ @ Uncle Dirty Dave's After Hours Joint" 24/7.
My playlist gets written off to DVD when it hits around 4.4 GB. That is
usually around 950 selections at 128 bit (CD quality) encoding. At those
rates 40 gigs should hold nearly 9000 individual cuts.

Some folks got into higher bit rates when digitising the WAV files and
do 160, 192, 256 and 360 bit rates ... although I must confess that I
cannot hear (nor detect with a scope) any difference in the sound. They
do audio dweeb babble about "nuances" and "presence". And I invite them
to go back to analog and vinyl if they are that concerned. Or, better
yet, support your local live music venues ... of whatever genre.

ML>Speaking of technological, several new problems have appeared
ML>with this computer, which I will display to the multitude of
ML>experts for their advice ... the sound has gone away again, and
ML>now the wireless is gone. A few days ago there was this rattling
ML>noise in the case, which went away; I'm wondering if something
ML>got kicked off and went disconnected.

You mentioned that you did have the foresight to take an extended
warranty ... you should use it. You might look into, if you can't take
the hit of sending it back and being without - Aarons or RentWay for a
temporary solution. They will, of course, try to get you to play out the
full term of the deal and wind up owning at a VERY inflated price. But,
you don't has to. And they often have units that are back "off lease"
(read the poor min-wage dweeb with delusions of grandeur couldn't keep
up the strokes) and that they don't mind using for short-term things
like you will need.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

Title: Dandelion Salad With Eggs & Bacon
 Categories: Salads, Pork, Dressings
      Yield: 4 servings

6 sl Bacon; cut in 1/2" pieces
      1 cl Garlic
    1/4 c Olive oil
      2 tb Red wine vinegar
      1    Shallot or 1/4 onion;
           - minced
    1/4 ts Salt
    1/2 ts Fresh ground pepper
      4 c Young, tender dandelion
           - leaves
      2 Dandelion roots; trimmed and
           - minced
      4 Hard-cooked eggs

Dandelion greens, both wild and cultivated, are quite bitter, but that
is part of their appeal. For this salad, I prefer the wild greens, or
cultivated ones from a home garden, picked when young and tender,
because I find much of the commercially available dandelion too mature
and coarse to eat raw. If dandelion on its own seems too strong for
your taste, make this salad using half spinach and half dandelion.

Cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crisp, about 7
minutes. Remove to paper towels to drain.

Bruise the garlic clove by hitting it with the back of a wooden spoon,
then rub it on the inside of a salad bowl. Discard the garlic. Add the
olive oil, vinegar, shallot, salt and pepper to the bowl; mix well
with a fork. Add the dandelion leaves and minced roots, and three
  quarters of the bacon.

Slice 1 of the eggs; coarsely chop the others. Add the chopped eggs to
  the salad and mix well.

Divide the salad among serving plates, then garnish with the remaining
  bacon and the sliced eggs.

  Serves 4
