xxcarol's kid surely has interesting and wide-ranging tastes. I
can't imagine anyone of any age voluntarily reading Paradise Lost.
Louis Lamour (or L'Amour) was one of the most prolific writers of
romanticized western states fiction; in some circles his work is
very well thought of. I've mentioned here that I've seen numerous
novels of his but have never been moved to actually pick one up.

This perhaps should have been a red flag - the fact that we
all know about the use of dehumidifyers in basements ...

I see you've not ventured into New England basements before.
They're generally the dampest parts of the house and are
fairly suitable for wine cellarage but not much else in the
way of food storage.

Red pepper soup
Cat: soup
serves: 4-5

3 Tb butter
1 1/4 lb red bell peppers, seeded, chopped (3 lg)
1 md onion, minced
1/4 ts ground cumin
1 pn cayenne
3 1/2 c stock (chicken or veggie)
2 ts lemon juice
salt

Italian parsley for garnish

Soften peppers and onion in butter over med heat. Add cumin and
cayenne and then stock. Bring to boil, cover, reduce heat, and
simmer 20 min. Puree. Return puree to pot. Add lemon juice and
taste for salt. Reheat and serve garnished with Italian parsley.
