*** Quoting Glen Jamieson from a message to Carol Shenkenberger ***

GJ> That could be so. Mullet can be made to taste good, but it is more of
GJ> a challenge than some other fish, like snapper or King George whiting.

Oh I dunno about challange. It was some mighty fine eating! Yes though,
finger the meat off the bones is best. Not a toddler food.

CS> it was just right. It all got eaten as we had Elises trio here that
CS> night for dinner. Sides were a big batch of rice and a tureen of 2
GJ>
GJ> That sounds wonderful! With a fish that size it would be easy to pick
GJ> the flesh from the bones, Asian style.

Thats just how we did it. Elise was at work and her husband is at sea. We
were going to go to Tonoo today but it's raining so we put it off for now.
Tina was worried but we reminded her that the Japanese markets are open on
Sunday just the same. So, it's clearing a little now and the flocks are
wandering about. Tina didnt know what to do with the green 'squash-melon' so
we chopped it up and added a drizzle of honey from her place and the kids are
happy.

We saved the shell of the 'squash-melon' so she can fill it with udon soup
(bake shell at 350F for about 15 mins then fill with hot soup and put on the
table). Surround with steam opened clams and canned asparagus and if you have
some mushrooms, waterchestnuts, bamboo shoots, or peeled steamed gobo, works a
trick! In her case, she has 2 red bell peppers, a can of mushrooms, and a can
of long asparagus spears so that works. She also had some small clams (not
much bigger than your thumb) and plans to use about 20 of them around the
shell of soup.

--slight break--

Humm! Cookoff seems to be developing? Maurice called the manager and got the
keys to the downstairs room (actually he's picking them up just now). Burt (a
different one obviously) borrowed my rice maker and Juni just borrowed my big
momma crock. Juni is reheating a squash-pumpkin soup she made and had frozen
in our chest freezer (a lovely yellow-orange thick thing with bits of onion
and sausage).

I can hear the kids screaming as they play through the building. Usually in
good summer weather we all wander off, but this time it rained just as
everyone seemed to be thinking of that so we all diverted at once to stay
home. It doesnt take much more than that for us to make for a cookout!

Dang, there goes the vertisserie! Malcolm and Sara asked for it. Humm. Now
what am I gonna cook? (slight other break, had 2 lbs chicken parts, adobo
would be my normal but out of that seasoning. It's back to loo'd chicken!)

CS> It was and these kids have been here long enough they do not mind
CS> such. We have lots of napkins and you just finger pull it off the
CS> bones and if desired, dip then eat.

GJ> And then, finally, did you use the skeleton for stock or give it to th
GJ> cat to finish off. (I used to like watching the family cat in the
GJ> Philippines delicately extracting miniscule specks of meat from betwee
GJ> the sharp fish bones.)

That would be fun! Sorry, no cat here. Even after 6 years, it feels wierd to
not have a cat. No, we donated the carcass to Tony and his wife as she makes
good stock of such. I'm ok at it, but her stuff is much better.

Sorry, I just realized all the names must be confusing. It's a big building,
with 60 apartments, set in an area with some 200 other 1-2 family townhouses
all in a very short distance. Main base housing. Hario Housing is 20miles
away and is larger. So large, you almost need a car to get from one end to
the other in Hario.

Anyways, I know pretty well 25 of the 60 here in my own building.

CS> My napkins arent fancy. Old tshirts cut up and such which charlotte
CS> gets to practice type-die on than washed, but hey, I can set a stack of
CS> 10 by each kid this way. We just toss'em in the washing machine when
 CS> done eating <g>.

GJ> Much more effective at wiping faces, too, I expect.

That they are! A sort of economy that is common here but if stateside folks do
it, they hide it from guests <g>.

CS> Having to walk all the groceries home, makes you realize paper napkins
CS> are not only espensive, but a waste of cart-space <g>. (Hey Charlotte,
CS> want a pack of napkins or a box of Oreos?)

GJ> And then you have to dispose of the used napkins, but not the Oreos.

Snicker, exactly! Needless to say the kid has a definate priority. Offered a
choice of oreos _or_ napkins, she happens to agree with me on cart-space.

 GJ> 1 ts Belachan

CS> Umm. I forgot again. What is that?

GJ> Belachan = Blachan = Terasi = fermented shrimp paste of Indonesian and

Ah, gotcha.

GJ> Malay origin. A horrid stink when it initially hits the hot pan, but
GJ> it gives a good flavour to stir-fried vegetables.

Yup <g>. Not one I stock normally but the one jar got used up in a decent span
of time.

Fridge find. Curried garlic paste? A sniff test says this goes to Tina for a
GF recipe for boneless chicken breast. Needs black fresh ground pepper added
I think, and perhaps a spiced or balsamic vinigar as a thinner to the paste.
Sodium rating is 200mg per TB. Fits her family diet needs I suspect.

                                       xxcarol
