CS> I was able to show him I knew by picking up a pot, and putting other
CS> things in there that he had which would make a good soup base with
CS> them then putting the little baggie on top (grin).

Great idea, one that I hadn't encountered before.

CS> His eyes popped open and this lovely smile developed and he offered

When you make it clear that you actually want to communicate,
people generally become more tractable, even friendly at times.

CS> with a little ingenuity. Anyways, i now have this fine powder to add
CS> to it that looks a little like what I imagine crushed dried fishskin
CS> might be like and it smells a bit like seaweed with a vaguely fruity
CS> undertone and is very very HOT. He demo'd that you use just a pinch at
CS> a time for a pot of soup. I am pretty sure it's mixed seaweed, dried
CS> fish, and some sort of hot horseradish-family item?

Not familiar with this particular one, but as you know all the
Asian countries have various togarishi-like seasoning mixtures.

CS> For the others, if you go to Asia, when shopping bring a pencil with
CS> eraser and a small pad of 3x5 roughly sized paper for use with
CS> imagination and note taking ;-)

This is also a good idea, but you can't take full credit for it,
as it's been used since time immemorial. The most poignant example
of pencil-pad communication is that between Beethoven and his
friends and visitors, in the 1820s when he had gone stone deaf.

CS> Oh another good buy there, not food though, was a nice soap. I love
CS> my nice smelly soaps! (Carol's soap making interests me immensely!).
CS> On a ship with limited room, you find the high grade 'good stuff' is
CS> all you want to ever get. I'd tell you the name but I can't. It's in
 CS> Thai script.

What does it smell like?

CS> find good times when we are off work and this Sunday is a 'off day
CS> underway' with a chili cookoff.
CS> I'll see what the chili cookoff underway offers in an hour or so.
CS> Might not be enough left to share since there are close to 3,000 people
 CS> underway right now.

How'd you do?
