 DS> Greetings on 9/11. Hope your travel was uneventful. [I've been

It was essentially uneventful. I told my bud I'd play in his
orchestra on the 11th, despite the fact that it is a wretched
orchestra and the setting was hokey (was going to be in the
Congressional caucus room, but they were busy debating the
war instead, so they got the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception;
the hokey part was this over-the-top flag-waving concert called
"Thus Spake America"). So I cashed in some miles and took a quick
turnaround jaunt to Chicago, as the dress rehearsal didn't get over
until the 10th at almost 11 pm, so no more flights out of Washington.

The 7:00 out was very light, and I didn't note any mention or
commemoration of the day (though as usual I slept for most of
the time); there was a purser announcement on the return thanking
people for flying United, especially on that day.

I'd left my tux and viola at the Sheraton, so just picked it
up and went to the concert, which had a bunch of second-tier
politicians, congresscritters and such (they'd tried for the
first string, but there was too much else going on that night),
most of them, to my surprise, Democrats.

One of the highlight songs was called Heal Our Land, by Orrin Hatch,
and they had expected him to show up, but he didn't; the song I
didn't find too objectionable, except that it leans too hard on
God to get the job done, rather than having us do it ourselves.
Another highlight was called Bring Him Home, which I think I mostly
endorsed. The honorary chair of the sponsoring committee was Laura
Bush, and there was apparently an encouraging letter from George,
which interestingly was mentioned in one of the speeches but never
read to us.

A bunch of dignitaries whose names and organizations I didn't
recognize - someone named Heather French mumble, who after being
crowned Miss America in 2000 made this big splash by deserting her
roots as a Southern Republican and becoming a Democrat, later
marrying a Democrat politician; the president of something called
Rolling Thunder (he looked like a stereotypical biker); and a
five-time Grammy winner Gospel singer named something Harris, who
was quite good, actually.

I refused the puny compensation they offered me for the concert.

 DS> I stopped at a memorial in Agawam (of all places!) after work and
 DS> left a single rose in memory of my cousin Joe, who worked at
 DS> Cantor Fitzgerald.

tomato pudding
cat: historical interest
servings: 4

10 oz tomato puree
2 oz boiling water
1 c light brown sugar
1/4 ts salt
1 c white bread, cubed 1"
1/4 c butter, melted

Boil together first 4 ingredients for 5 min.

In 1 qt casserole, combine bread and butter. Pour
tomato mixture over. Bake, covered, at 375F for 30 min.
