 Hi, Janis,

 >> It's almost a joke in this house how I won't grow them in my garden,
 >> or even buy brussel sprouts <g>.. Ron loves them, but I can't stand
 >> 'em... 'course he hates anchovies with a passion so I call it even

 > Hm, a marital discord?

JK> Well, I'll say it's the only thing I can think of that we disagree on
JK> so the fact that I haven't wanted to eat them doesn't break our
 JK> marriage :) :) Ron's a very neat guy :)

Maybe it would be a nice treat for him if you would buy a few for him
and cook them just for him, while making a veggie you like for
yourself, especially if you like one he doesn't care for. He would know
you did it just for him, for love!

 >can grow tomatoes along the wall. A

 >(I had 4-5 inside already I wasn't ready to use) so I

 >use, and she said she didn't like tomatoes!

JK> As hard to imagine as it, two of my children have allergies to
JK> tomatoes.. for an Italian cook, that's a little rough, believe me
<grin>.. Growing up in an Italian household, Tomato sauce was a given every
 JK> Sunday <smile>

Allergies I understand. Some just don't like them. Barbara McNay has
gone on record as not caring for them because of the seeds and gooshy
parts, and in fact, I was reluctant to eat them fresh when I was young
(sauce was fine). What I can't understand is why these people are so
worried about my harvesting the 'maters if they don't much like them?

 > I walked out to water the garden with a bucket
 >and the 8YO girl was all over me asking to
 >help pick them all! No, I wasn't picking
 >them all, just watering, but if I let her
 >pick a tomato, would she eat it? She wasn't sure.
 >I presume her Mom's dislike of them means

 >she said her Daddy would eat them. So I
 >suggested she pick out a nice one for her Daddy,
 >and eventually let every kid in the local pack
 >pick one tomato for their family... the little
 >black kids said Gramma loved tomatoes. I am
 >very willing to share because 6 plants all
 >come ripe at the same time

 JK> That's neat, I bet they appreciate that :)

It was sort of fun. Earlier in the year I showed them how the flowers
developed a bulge behind them which would become fruits, so I am now a
biology teacher! I involved them in my gardening a bit because I was
trying to get them to be careful about playing too close to my garden.
A mis-kicked soccer ball just might wipe out a whole tomato plant early
 in the Spring or Summer.

JK> Could be allergies that causes that distaste...though from what
JK> I've seen alleriges can sometimes make a person crave the thing
JK> they are allergic to "more".. go figure.. :)

Sigh. I am not dangerously allergic, but somewhat sensitive to a
couple of fruits I really like anyway. Light green fruits, though I
suppose that's a coincidence. I adore honeydew melons which give me
a sore throat (my Gramma said that happened for her, too), and Kiwis,
which cause the insides of my ears to itch! I eat both occasionally,
anyway. I can at least eat white grapes happily, so light green isn't
 the automatic warning for me.

 > I should go over and suggest he take a few as he
 > wants them, for sandwiches and salads for himself.
JK> Sure, or drop a bag or whatever off <grin>

I would rather make it a welcome to take as needed, as an oversupply
makes pressure to use them in time. They really do keep well on the
 vine till you need them.

 > I hesitate, because I made such an offer to another neighbor last
 > year, a Korean lady. and she took everything even half-ripe, for some
 > big cooking project or pickling, I guess! I wasn't planning to be
 >cleaned out, just to share a bit of my bounty.

JK> That can be painful, being cleaned out in that way <grin>

She also had worried I wasn't picking them early enough. Maybe she never
appreciated tomatoes ripened on the vine all the way, but presumed
pinkish supermarket rocks were the proper norm for tomato ripeness.
