=================
GJ> I heard on the radio in Houston, a series of complaints by air
GJ> travellers about the parlous state of US airlines these days, with an
GJ> ever-increasing percentage of flights delayed or cancelled. It was

ATC inefficiencies; airport inefficiencies; cutting corners on
fuel, staffing, capacity; holding planes to accommodate dozens
of people stuck at the silly security. Lots of things going on.

GJ> alleged that this was due to the state of terror following 9/11, when
GJ> passenger numbers were down, and the airlines accordingly used smaller
GJ> aircraft. Once passenger numbers returned to normal, the same, smaller
GJ> planes were retained to try to carry them all, but with little
GJ> success. Whether that was correct, I don't know, but that is what was
 GJ> claimed.

There are more factors than that conspiring. On my last westbound
transcon, the pilot came on the horn and said that he was trying
to make up the time we had wasted sitting in line on the tarmac,
but they weren't letting him. What he didn't tell us was we'd
sat for half an hour because the control tower was understaffed,
and that there was no way we'd make up time, as we'd eaten far
too much fuel during that time, plus we had a totally full 321,
an aircraft notorious for chewing up Jet A and that should never
have been 1. allowed to be certified in the US; 2. filled up to
seated capacity; and 3. scheduled for a westbound transcon nonstop.
Given the circumstances, I was sort of hoping for a fuel stop so I
could brag to my frequent flyer buddies.

GJ> pilot said it would be better to pay after the flight, "just in case".

Delivered in the appropriately laconic style, no doubt.

MLe> heck, you should see the home-built model of the launch facility this
MLe> guy is doing... _no blueprints_! everything done to scale from photos
MLe> and any places that any measurment details can be gleaned from...
ML> So why doesn't he work for the CIA if he is interested in
ML> pulling information together into a useful whole? He could
ML> do something like that for, say, the Ekranoplan bases in
 ML> the Caspian Sea.
GJ> Are there any of those still flying?

Dunno, the guy doesn't work for the CIA.

Amazing that such things could fly at all, much less at the 20000 ft
that was claimed for them.

To Make A Ragoo Of Pig's-Ears
Take a quantity of pig's-ears and boil them in one half wine and the
other water; cut them in small pieces, then brown a little butter,
and put them in, and a pretty deal of gravy, two anchovies, an
eschalot or two, a little mustard, and some slices of lemon, some
salt, and stew all these together, and shake it up thick. Garnish the
  dish with barberries.
