You no doubt got a Chinese can opener. As people here know, I am
very down on most Chinese manufactured products (and foods, now,
too!). The thing is that now there's this huge excess of capital
in the hands of the Red Chinese, which they'll use to become a
dominant economic power, and it's our fault. The horrendous litigious
society we live in has actually prevented such eventualities from
happening domestically - gross malfeasance is usually penalized
here - but there is essentially no check or balance in our
relation with the Chinese.

   I stripped off the paper around the top, but that
 BM> made no difference.  I finally tried the old can opener, and with a
 BM> good bit of effort on my part, the can finally began to rotate, and the
 BM> lid came off.  Aargh! 

If it is a can opener with long grip arms, you can sort of
angle these to "catch" the already-cut part, and eventually
the can lid will be cut enough so you can lever it open. If
it's one of those cute little openers that will fit into the
palm of your hand, you can try the same thing, but it's much
more difficult. What you might be able to do in this case
is to make several little cuts and then try cutting the
metal between those little cuts (either with the opener or
pulling with a pair of pliers) - much annoyance, but what
did you expect for buying a piece of crap like that?

Next time get a Swiss, French, or Brit one. Spend about 5x
as much for something at actually works.

That was one of the stupidest inventions ever made: novelty for
novelty's sake, I guess.

Leche Flan ala Pangasinan
Cat: dessert, Filipino
Serves: 6 - 8

1 cn condensed milk
1 cn evaporated milk
12 egg yolks
1 1/2 c sugar
1 Tb vanilla or lemon extract
- or any fruit flavor of your choice

Caramelize the sugar. Pour caramelized sugar in a mold.
Beat condensed milk, evaporated milk, and egg yolks.
Pour mixture in the mold and steam 20 min in a double
boiler, or you cn bake it 45 min in a pan in a water
bath until it's soft and set.

Can be served with ice cream or halo-halo.
