The answer is not blowin in the wind (grin)...All mail to Hawaii goes by
air, other than surface packages which go by air (if there's room and
weight) or cargo ship. Most mail up and down the coasts (both east and
west) travels by air or truck and when the airlines are busy...more travels
by truck. There are established "delivery zones" for 1st day, 2nd day, and
3rd and beyond delivery. It used to be that each "station" would process
the "outgoing" mail each evening and it would be bundled up and sent to a
larger processing center in sacks that were already sorted for location
(like northern Calif, Southern calif, and other states like Georgia). These
sacks would go to a larger distribution center where the sacks would be
combined with other sacks going in the same "direction", for example,
"Central States" would be those states above Tennessee, and east of the
Mississippi river including Michigan and Minnesota and Wisconsin (Big
cities like Chicago would be the routing for this mail). All "central
states" mail would be sent to Chicago where it would agian be resorted into
smaller "zones" by sacks and then sent off.
With the postal service trying to automate, they've gotten to the point
that they have these huge machines...and not enough mail to run them
efficiently...so now they just take the mail "raw" from larger areas that
used to process it on site...so they have enough mail to run through the
machines...well that slows the whole process down more than it speeds it
up...in spite of what the postal managers claim. Postal service used to
have guaranteed delivery...but no longer, unless you want to pay "extra"
for it!
