Ärende: CLOCKS
==============
-=> On 10-15-07 12:17, Dave Drum said this about CLOCKS <=-

JM> JM> My clock battery is dead, and though I have

JM> JM> *find* the old clock battery to do the switch.

JM> DS> I can recall having a computer with a dead clock battery that
JM> DS> was soddered onto the motherboard. No joy there.

JM> Soldered. That's totally ridiculous, since the
JM> first thing likely to die in a computer IS that
JM> cheap little battery. To make a system costing
JM> hundreds if not over $1000 obsolete for the sake
 JM> of a $3 part is insane!

DD> It's called "marketing" - specific branch, planned obsolescence.

That's about the size of it!

About ten years ago I was given a computer whose battery had died. This
was a rechargeable battery, 3.6 volts, but the design of the circuit
board was such that it couldn't get more than 3.0 volts -- I actually
measured it with the battery disconnected.

But the battery -- which I guess must have been fully charged when the
computer board was assembled -- had held up for about two years.

I replaced it with a new rechargeable battery and re-arranged the
circuit on the board so it could charge up to its proper voltage, and
used the computer for several more years. Yeah, I know people say you
can't unsolder and replace stuff on computer boards, but this is the
fourth time I've done something like that and I've never had a failure
-- touch wood! <GGGGGGG>

Two years ago, the battery died in my current computer. This time I
didn't worry about unsoldering it and replacing it. I traced out the
circuit to the jumper links and reset them for an external battery. Then
I fitted three AA alkaline cells in a little holder that is held with
double-sided tape inside the case.

I got the idea from my sister's computer which used a non-rechargeable
external battery. A replacement of the same type would have cost over
$40, and was physically smaller than the three AA cells I used to
replace it.

I expect these cells to last at least 5 years, and cost only a few cents
to replace.

On the subject of clocks, I found these two recipes:

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Cake "New Year Clock"
 Categories: Russian, Dessert
      Yield: 5 Servings

    250 g Butter
    200 g Powdered sugar
      3 Egg yolks
    100 g Melted chocolate
    250 g Fruit jelly
    500 g Shortbread
     50 g Cognac
      3 Egg whites

This cake is great just because it is very simple and you don't need
  to bake anything.

Ground butter with sugar, add yolks, one at a time and melted
chocolate. Chop fruit jelly finely, crumble shortbread and sprinkle
with cognac and stir thoroughly. 15 minutes later, put the dough on a
dish and shape a cake. Leave the cake in a cold place for a night. In
the morning on 31 of December cover the cake with whipped whites with
sugar and draw a clock with hands.

  Bon Appetit! Olga. www.ruscuisine.com
