I'm not sure if there's a British person with the same name, but no, Alton
Brown is an American.  He was originally a film producer, but noticed how bad
most cooking shows were.  So he went to school to become a chef, and then
started working on producing cooking shows.  The show he has on the Food
Network here is called "Good Eats", and it basically gets into all the science
and such behind cooking.  But it's done in a layman's way so that it's easy to
understand, makes use of lots of clever props and funny things, and is really
an enjoyable show overall.

Alton Brown's gimmick, I suppose, is that he doesn't like buying specialty
devices with a singular purpose, if a less expensive device can serve multiple
purposes.  He'll sometimes use a cordless drill in place of a number of
specialty rotary devices, has used terracotta planter bases (unglazed) as pizza
stones, two little fence picket things (not sure what they're called) with a
hacksaw blade to cut a cake into even layers, etc.  Sometimes it's really
cheesy, but other times it's just really interesting and informative.
