==========================
Hi Joan,

RH> We've not tried them either; it's so easy to make up our own. Just
RH> have to make sure I've enough wheat ground and it's at room
 RH> temperature.

JM> Well, with your WW preferences, I can understand that,
JM> but I think of pizza as a "quick'n'easy" choice so
JM> don't want to get into making my own dough for just
JM> one pizza. And of course, as I don't have a breadmaker
JM> because I don't want to give space to one, it is
JM> more work for me. And more time. I do work a conventional
JM> schedule, which cuts into time-consuming cooking
 JM> techniques.

I understand; it all comes down to difference in taste and life styles.
I suspect if I worked, a lot of the things I do now would not be done.
In Germany, I worked for a bit (part time) and we started buying some
of our bread from a local bakery. After I broke my wrists, we went to
store bread for a few years until Steve got our first bread machine. I
pulled a nice looking loaf out of machine #3 a couple of hours ago.

RH> Yes, it was Huntsville, AL but he should be back on the ground in

JM> Huntsville, AL is a nice town and developing nicely.
JM> I have been very impressed on my visits back there.
JM> For Cooking people, I don't think there is any
JM> culinary draw, though. Just to set that straight!

He had some interesting meals but pretty much ones that are available in
in any good sized place.

JM> Mom and I explored a BBQ joint last December which
JM> was very highly touted in the local press and were
JM> not impressed. Decent lunch, but nothing special. I

We've often differed from local press food critics over restaurants.
Some in HI we really liked got slammed but Haliawa Joe's (our favorite
on the North Shore) got a good write up. OTOH, another one up there was
supposed to be really good--we tried it and were very disappointed.

JM> know where I would send people for BBQ in Alabama,
JM> but they would need a time machine, as it is closed.
JM> If you ever visit Huntsville, maybe look for Gibson's
JM> Barbecue, though I offer no guarantees after all

We'll try to remember that if we get over that way.

JM> these years. Huntsville does have the Space Museum
JM> but I don't think it has many other "tourist"
JM> attractions unless you have special interests. I have
JM> toured the Burritt Museum, for example, and left

There were some things in the brochure Steve brought home that looked
promising.

JM> with an impression of the hard lives of southern
JM> slaves, as a slave dwelling has been preserved for
JM> us to contemplate, and it must have been darn cold

Nothing I've ever come across has given me a picture of an easy life for
slaves.

JM> has a Space Museum is that the von Braun team was
JM> sent there, after WWII, to do missile research for
JM> the USA. They were sort of spoils of war, and I

I think they would have rather been there than in the Soviet Union which
was the alternative.

JM> Materials Research. I got to participate in a
JM> niggling way to the Spacelab Project! Huntsville

Your 15 minutes of fame?

JM> my family befriended a few of the German families
 JM> of the rocket scientists.

Did your mom learn how to cook some of their favorite foods? As we were
eating supper Friday night, we realised that Steve had probably never
had sauerbraten until we got married--and he's half German.

 JM> pork livers,for one thing, and I saw chitlin's
JM> by the 5-gallon plastic pail. (No, Mom didn't want

RH> OK to see but eating them??????????? I don't know if I could.

JM> I don't quite understand the difference between
JM> chitlins and accepted hog casings for sausages.
JM> (Which beat pulling plastic casings out of your
JM> teeth when eating pepperoni pizza). Can anyone
 JM> elaborate?

I think part of it is how they're treated in the initial butchering or
what end of the intestine they come from. But, yes, pulling plastic out
of your teeth isn't the ideal answer either.

RH> even more since I was last up there, 7 years ago. When I left home, my
JM> JM> At their age, the convenience is worth it.
RH> I guess but that is what Steve and I always refer to as "cardboard"
RH> pizza as that's what it tastes mostly like.

JM> It helps a bit if you get them off the cardboard base
JM> before heating them! But as you mentioned, your Mom
JM> wasn't that fussy about such details.

We used that term even before my mom started using those "pizzas". My
mom did transfer them to a cookie sheet; it's just that those "pizzas"
have no taste (or at least nothing like a real pizza). That's why we
called them cardboard, for the lack of taste.

Catch you later,
