An issue with CR is that it tends to favor reliable but
characterless foods - that was most noticeable some years
back when it rated Hamm's and Olympia as 1-2 on beer list.
Since then, it's gotten somewhat more sophisticated for
beer (branching out into several categories), but on the
whole I look to it as a validation of unadventurous,
wholesome palates and products.

 DS> Top rated Merlot was Columbia Crest Grand Estates (WA) at $11.  They
 DS> also liked Yellow Tail (Australia) at $8.

I've always liked WA wines; Columbia Crest is the second label
of Chateau Ste. Michelle but has way outstripped its parent in
popularity. I'll happily drink Columbia Crest but prefer the
fancier wines of Ste. Michelle; even better I like those of
Columbia Winery across the street. Yellow Tail is okay.

 DS> In the Rieslings, top was Covey Run Columbia Valley (WA) at $8.  At
 DS> the bottom were Jacob's Creek Reserve (Australia) at $13 and
 DS> Trimbach (France) at $17-19.

Covey Run Riesling is a nice wine, and I've bought it more than
once - that's because it periodically goes on sale at $4.99.
Jacob's Creek wines are okay, and I bet the Reserve was just too
sophisticated for the CU tasters - and I bet it tasted like
gasoline, and I bet I wouldn't like it either. Trimbach makes a
very dry Riesling and is by far the classiest (and probably to me
the best) of the lot.

 DS> In the Sauvignon blanc, top pick was Mud House Marlborough (New
 DS> Zealand) at $14. Another best buy pick was Coopers Creek
 DS> Marlborough, also from New Zealand at $13. Bottom of the list was
 DS> Columbia Crest Two Vines (WA) at $8.

I plead ignorance of these wines. They really all do smell
like urine to me.
