I have done a fair amount of travelling around USA, and apart from the
Echo people, many of whom I have known for years, I have met quite a
few other locals, particularly in places like farmers' markets, where I
found them very open and happy to talk to me about their produce.

You need have no worries about visiting Australia, as many thousands of
USAns visit or are resident in Australia, and so the locals are
familiar with them as people, and fully aware that the sins of your
leaders are not necessarily visited upon the visitors.  Although when
your president last came here he had 3 jumbo jets of bodyguards and
support staff, you don't need to go to those lengths to ensure your
personal safety. (g)  The main dangers that you might find here are
associated with over-indulgence in good food and wine.

MLoo has so far survived 3 visits here, and there are still some South
Australian wine areas left for him to visit.

I have done that trip, but in the opposite direction, from London via
Brussels and Hamburg to Copenhagen.  Part of that trip is on an
enormous ferry, so large that it takes the full length of the entire
train - plus dozens of large trucks and cars.

I see he has his priorities about right!  It is early summer now; good
weather for swimming, sailing and fishing.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
 
      Title: (SBS) Green Mango Salad
 Categories: Australian, Salads, Fruit, Shrimp
      Yield: 2 servings
 
      1    Green mango, preferably nam
           Doc mai
      5    Red shallots
      1 tb Dried shrimp
           Ground dried chilli to
           Taste
           Thai fish sauce, to taste
      1 ts Sugar
      1    Stem fresh coriander
      2    Lettuce leaves
 
  Peel and slice the mango into julienne (matchstick) strips. Peel and
  slice the shallots into julienne strips. Pound dried shrimp in a
  mortar and pestle. Mix the above ingredients with the mango and
  season with chilli, fish sauce and sugar. Mix well, serve on a bed of
  lettuce garnished with coriander.
