===========================
 Hi, Glen,

-> ML> Anyhow. Geography lesson time. Southern USA refers to, roughly,
-> ML> the area between Texas (inclusive or exclusive) and Florida.
-> ML> Arizona, though south, is in the Southwest (which goes from
-> ML> Nevada to Texas inclusive). Interestingly, California, the
-> ML> southwesternmost (though not southernmost nor westernmost) of
-> ML> the lower 48, is usually not included in the Southwest. Florida,
-> ML> Georgia, and South Carolina are generally considered "the
-> ML> Southeast," though this region is most often treated as a subset
 ->  ML> of the South.

Actually, I consider the Southeast to include both
Carolinas, Tennessee and Kentucky, and Alabama and
even Mississippi. Probably Virginia, too. More or
less everything east of the Mississippi River and
south of the border separating Maryland from
Virginia, Indiana & Ohio from Kentucky. That's the
way our college sports were organized, at least.
I know Alabama and Mississippi were both in the
SEC (SouthEast Conference) for NCAA sports. (Oh,
 that's National College Athletic Association.)

-> Interesting. Is that an official group classification of those

Nothing is official, though the NCAA classifications
represent some sort of consensus. Maybe that's not
so accurate though, as now I think of it, I think
the Carolinas and Virginia and probably Maryland are
in the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference).

-> How, then, is California classified? It is, after all, the ->
Southwesternmost. Or do the residents consider themselves as superior,
-> and not quite united with the other States?

I would consider California to be West. There would
be some argument for lumping it with Oregon and
Washington as all "Pacific Coast". I guess it depends
on the need for such classifications.

 HN> I think you'll find that each
HN> state seems to consider itself as
HN> slightly (or more than slightly) superior
HN> to all the others. (grin)With the possible
HN> exception of New Jersey. Each "region"

GJ> Poor New Jersey! Lowest in the pecking order? Runt of the pack? Why
GJ> is that state so ill-starred?

NJ isn't that bad overall, but it has some
defects in some areas. Some Southern states used
to be "picked on", for widespread poverty and
inadequate literacy rates, for example. I was assaulted
as a high schooler by the mantra that Alabama spent
less per pupil on education than the other 49 states,
EVEN Mississippi! (Maybe the teacher's union was
pushing that line?) But my town's schools were good
enough, because the local populace demanded it and
supported them. (Some rural areas, OTOH, were deficient.)

GJ> Interesting that most of the people in this Echo have migrated between
GJ> other states and/or countries at different times in their lives. Are
GJ> they more peripatetic than most other Americans?

I can think of a few who haven't moved round much,
too. Remember the militarily involved ones will
 automatically have moved around "professionally".
But for many of us, modern times demands mobility
as jobs with national or international corporations
often involve transfers for professional staff. Both
in my case; I was in Washington as an infant because
Dad was stationed in Neah Bay as an Air Force officer.
We left my "native" Michigan (both Dad's and Mom's
families were there) because Chrysler Aerospace
transferred him to Alabama. And then I started moving
around to pursue education and then job possibilities,
getting to NC, Tennessee and now NY. Hmm, I spent
some time as a child in Missouri, too, as Dad
transitioned from AF to his first civilian full-time
job there. So I am a 7-stater, so far! Besides, you
should comment on peripatetic! Your kids are not only
all over the Australian map but they move around fast
 enough to keep me confused!

I'll beg off on a recipe, no room for one now!

 Joan
