Ärende: kids and fast food
==========================
Hi Jim,

RH> But they are usually not exposed to it at a young age. At that age,
RH> most of their parents are in the early stages of a career and eating
RH> out as a family without bankrupting the wage earner will tend to send a

JW> When I was a kid we simply never ate out.... period. My early food

Our times of eating out were rare; I can remember even into my late
teens my parents packing sandwiches if we were traveling during a time
when we'd have to eat.

JW> memories are of spring strawberries eaten off the vine, garden fresh
JW> peas, apples off the tree, venison in the fall, watching a neighbour
 JW> butcher a hog etc.

My dad used to give us a fresh (washed) stalk of rhubarb out of the
garden. To this day I can eat it without sugar.

JW> There was one exception: we made an annual trip to Ottawa as a sort of
JW> cultural expedition to visit the parliament buildings or a museum. We
JW> always had lunch at a nice place, usually one Mom remembered fondly
JW> from her WWII days and we always ate supper at the Chateau Laurier, a
 JW> grand
JW> old railway hotel and the best in the city for over a century. That is
JW> where I first tasted sherry, oysters, lobster and French cuisine. I

We had rare times like visiting the World's Fair in NYC in 65. But
overall, I was well out of the home when I had most "exotic" things.

JW> first tasted Chinese takeout and KFC in grade nine when we moved to
JW> Ottawa and pizza not until college.

Chinese take out--well after I was married, pizza (or rather a poor
imitation of it) while at home. Pizzaria pizza was in college. We also
had a student cook who made an out of this world pizza in college.

RH> Also, as I mentioned earlier, if the kid(s) have no decent table
RH> manners, they are more accepted at fast food places

JW> I have a problem with children without manners and feel a rant coming
JW> on which I will try to stifle.

I agree with you, but recognise that not all parents raise their
children as well mannered as you do Neekha or we did Rachel & Deborah.
Thus, I tolerate it in varying degrees, depending on time and place.

JW> [Alex] also delights in picking strawberries in our yard and can
JW> tell our berries from California supermarket berries by sight and
 JW> taste.

RH> If the ones in your yard are like the little wild ones we used to
RH> find, there is a definate difference. The little wild ones are so much
RH> more intense in their flavor than the big cultivated ones that look
RH> pretty but have much less flavor.

JW> We have two hothouse plants, one for each kid. One is the variety with
JW> huge cone shaped berries and white hearts similar to commercial
JW> berries. They are better though because they are fresh. The second is
JW> a heirloom variety with smaller, sweeter round berries that are red
JW> and juicy right through. Way better. Neither compare to wild berries
JW> though which should be ripe soon (in the arctic July is strawberry
JW> season not May). They are common everywhere. We have wild raspberries,
 JW> currants, gooseberries,

Sounds good.

JW> cranberries and rose hips in our back yard, but not strawberries for
 JW> some reason.

JW> And like Neekha she shares with pet mice and wild ants.

Get a horse! Our neighbors had one and we found the best strawberries
in the fied where he was kept.

RH> Cute! Is she holding "tea parties" with them and her toys?

JW> She just got her first tea set last week. So far I have been her only
 JW> guest.

Her circle of invitees will expand all too soon & you will be left out.
Those are the times you can be a fly on the wall observing the fun she's
having.

Catch you later,
Ruth
