-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

ML> I wonder why ugly animals with beady eyes and no eyelashes
ML> (such as rats) aren't fair game for the emotional vegetarians.

Although perception of ugliness is personal, I don't think rats are
intrinsically any uglier than, for example, bison. They do, however,
suffer from bad press as result of that black death thing, and their
often disgusting diet. Many people keep them as pets.

GJ> I wonder if the crews of whaling ships eat whale meat?

ML> It used to be enough of an aberration to be written about:
 ML> http://www.princeton.edu/~batke/moby/moby_064.html

I shall look that up next time.

ML> but nowadays whaling ships do their dirty scientific deed
ML> largely for the purpose of harvesting the meat. And as you
ML> know, the producers of a revenue-generating product are
ML> less than eager to consume the product themselves, instead
ML> preferring cheaper less desirable things such as hardtack
 ML> and salt pork.

That is fine if you are just considering whale steaks, blubber and
other items of scientific interest which have to be brought back to
Iceland or Japan for further study on the effects of soaking with soy
sauce and application of heat, but what about the whale organ meat?
How big is a whale's brain, and what is the best way to cook it?
Whale tripe would probably be rather fishy and tough, but the liver
and lights should be OK. I'll allow your imagination to work on the
other offal items.

 ML> Missy Wombat, recipezaar.com
GJ> And I haven't eaten roast wombat, either, although I have been told it
GJ> is quite delicious if you get a young one.

ML> The wombat I saw at Cleland Park looked appetizing enough,
ML> as did most of the animals.

Fortunately for their feelings they didn't know you had feasted on one
of their relatives the night before.

GJ> I would welcome the opportunity to try whale meat, roasted.
ML> There's a hotel on Spitzbergen that serves a mixed grill
ML> of seal and whale. I can't wait.

Maybe we can arrange to meet Jim there.

ML> Drawn butter actually is merely liquid clarified butterfat:
GJ> In other words, "Ghee"? I favour your explanation over Jim's.
 ML> Ghee whiz!

 ML> Quarter-Pound Cheddar-Melt

 ML> 8. Enjoy a great McDonald's Quarter-Pound Cheddar-Melt!
 ML> Serving suggestion

ML> Add two slices of cooked bacon in an "X" pattern before adding the
 ML> beef for a McDonald's Bacon-Cheddar Melt. An even
ML> more limited time offer, as they say.

Wot, no beetroot?

Now, where was that whale-meat restaurant...?

      Title: Whale Pie
Categories: Game, Pies, Native, Mushrooms, Whale
      Yield: 4 Servings

     20 oz Whale meat
           One bay leaf
      1 Stalk celery
      6 Peppercorns
      1 tb Salt
    1/2 c Butter
    1/2 c Flour
      1 c Light cream
    1/8 ts Pepper
    1/4 ts Salt
      1 lb Can pearl onions
      4 oz Can sliced mushrooms
      1 pk Frozen peas
      2 cn Pimentos, sliced
      1 Box pastry mix

Whale meat (minke whale) is unfortunately no longer easy available,
but it can still be obtained in some countries. Whale meat is a very
strong tasting, but marinades may be used to help tenderize and add
flavour, such as red wine, oil, juniper berries, port, spices, bay
leaf and peppercorns. Normally I use whale meat for steaks or for
barbecue, but this is a new recipes, which turned up to be a great
  success:

Cut the whale meat up, and place in a large kettle and cover with
water (or use crock pot). Add bay leaf, celery, peppercorns and 1
tablespoon salt. Bring to boil, cover and cook over low heat for 2
hours or until the meat is tender. Melt the butter in a saucepan, add
flour and stir until blended. Add light cream, pepper and salt. Cook
stirring, until thickened. Arrange whale meat pieces, onions,
mushrooms, peas and pimentos in 2 quart casserole. Add sauce to
  within 1 inch of top.

Prepare the pastry mix. Cut pastry circle 1/2 inch larger than
casserole and place over the whale-mixture, turning edge of pastry
under and pressing to casserole with fork or spoon. Bake in preheated
450 degree oven 15 min. or until crust is golden brown.
