===============================
Hi Carol,

RH> Now I've got to start picking up the odds and ends of favorites we've
RH> found over here that may be hard to get in Georgia. I don't think ther
RH> will be too much new stuff, but I could be surprised.

CS> Hows that going? I'm catching up older echomail now with somethng
 CS> like 2,000 messages ahead <g>.

Going well, got several things at the commissary today. I'll try to get
those Asian print fat quarters this week (in blue & green).

CS> To keep the thread current though, the flock came by and dropped off
CS> some of the booty then went back out (garnering 2 more and dropping
CS> off Michelle who has a blister between her toes from new sandals).
CS> Tonoo market area and i added that I was out of Miso, so Charlotte
CS> will get us a 'fistful' (about 1/4 cup worth). Rumor has it early
CS> meekans are about (Mandarin oranges pretty much). I told her to
CS> pickup some chicken necks too if the meekans are in so I can make
CS> 'meekan chicken' (something I need to MM for the rest of you one day
CS> but in short, it's mandarin oranges and chicken necks with a soy/saki
CS> base sauce and a small amount of fresh darkish miso).

Sounds yummy, especially if it's cool outside.

CS> Charlotte now has my pull-cart and about 30$ worth of yen, 10$ worth
CS> of that for our favorite 'wreathe of smiles' flower lady (the one with
CS> so many wrinkles from her smiles, we all just love her).

Somebody you'll be missing after you leave.

 CS> BTW, it's eel season <g>.

RH> Enjoy them; I won't tell Steve( he'd think them rather disgusting
RH> anyway).

CS> Hehehe No telling what else will be in Charlotte's cart! She's under
CS> strict instructions to not get any 'pets'. Eel season is ending and
CS> seacucumbers are in now but I expect mostly we will find squid and
CS> octopus in her booty-bag as well as some hard shelled sea-critter
CS> stuff (shellfish, clams and that ilk).

As long as they play nice with each other.........

CS> Thats what it turns out to be, based on translation help. It seems,
CS> the product is made from 'rice bread' from 'rice flour' hence locally
CS> called 'panko' when dealing with us folks who know that name. 'Pan
CS> gohan' may be the right name? I missed part of that as Don was trying
 CS> to translate.

CS> I didnt know there was a wheat based bread version until I checked
 CS> Google.

RH> The old "learn something new evry day" policy at work again.

CS> Yup! Seems the classic 'panko' is wheat based. Seems what I get is
CS> rice based. Honestly, they are swappable this time as far as i can
 CS> tell.

I don't see why not, unless you want a certain flavor.

CS> It's wierd Ruth, in that I have a hard time describing what I get but
CS> then again, not so hard to understand. Almost everything i do here in
CS> cooking is 'translated' and if anything has more than 5 ingredients,
CS> the chances are at least 1 is local-type and I am trying to use
CS> 'engrish' and hoping it is right.

I have a good understanding, partly being military, partly living in
"unique" places.

CS> I made a cooking mistake last night. I used USA strong garlic and it
CS> was WAAYY too much. Ended up having to toss the food out (grin, dont
CS> we all make mistakes now and again?). Here I was, happily adding 1/4
 CS> cup garlic...

And keeping away all vampires in the neighborhood. (G)

RH> I am looking forward to living in the south again. We've been to visi
RH> NC & SC briefly since leaving in spring of 83 but at times, too brief,
RH> convenient if anything happens to our parents--don't have to catch an
RH> overnight flight just to get back to the west coast& who knows how man
RH> more flights to get to where they are. The van is beginning to strong
RH> hint that it's replacement time so we're debating several options. Wi

CS> Yes, better location for a time for some things! On the Van, I am not
CS> sure what to do when I get stateside other than check the used vehicle
CS> lots and pick one out. I cant afford to adapt our current car to
CS> 'other side driving' so it will have to go away. With our 'every 2
CS> year' inspection due soon, it will have a good year on it left when we
CS> leave so be easy to sell.

We were planning to donate our van to charity--body is still good but
showing its age in other ways (needed a new battery this week, old one
was 6 years and 8 days old in the van). We like to buy new and drive it
forever and (half of an) amen.

Catch you later,
Ruth
