It would be really nice but we're not holding our breath on it
happening.  He just pinned on his Master Sergeant (E8) the beginning of
last year so it would have to be way out of zone condiseration for him
to be selected.  As of now our plans are retirement in April, 2009 with
26 years.  That would give him a retirement check of 65% of base pay
based on the highest 3 years of earnings.  IF he made SGM, and we could
stay the full 3 years, he would retire at 30 years with a check of 75%.
As it currently stands, Steve can't stay in beyond 26 years unless he
were picked up for promotion.  Any way you look at it, it's way beyond
our original plans of "4 years, take the college money and out" we had
thought would be the case when he enlisted in 1983.

Can't say as I've regretted the military life tho.  With the downturn in
my health, having expert medical care would have been quite unaffordable
otherwise. Having the opportunity to live in various parts of the world
for extended times (OK, some weren't quite that long), introductions to
new and unusual foods, making new friends all over the world etc was
something I never envisioned prior to Steve enlisting.  With living in
an area heavily populated by Marines, we heard about kim chee (mostly
negative reports) but had never tried it.  Now we've tried it, like it
and have done so with countless other foods.  It is possible but not
very probable that we may have been able to buy a computer eventually
and may have stumbled across Fidonet at some point but unitl we moved to
AZ (with the military), we had no idea of its exsistence.  Of course
we've had some bad times, as is to be expected, but who's to say things
would have been any better or worse had Steve not enlisted.

Texas is one state I never thought I would spend 2 1/2 years of my life
living in--but did, thanks to the Army.  Lots of good people and good
eats in that state.
