-=> Quoting Carol Shenkenberger to Glen Jamieson <=-

After yesterday's Echo coming up with only a few msgs from "our" side
of the Pacific, the mob out East have again been allowed in, to give
over 70, with 10 personals to me.

CS> I miss having my little garden plot. It wasnt much, very easy to tend
CS> due to size, but I miss it.

I think this urge to garden is a genetic characteristic which has
developed over thousands of generations of house-dwellers. :)

GJ> bananas, apples, etc, and prices them at only 25 - 50% of full price.
GJ> I often get skin-marked or mis-shapen apples like that, which taste
GJ> just as good as the pretty ones. People wanting to make tomato sauce
GJ> are very happy to snap up the squishier ones.

CS> Same here. I get things I plan to cook up to a soup base or perhaps
CS> puree anyways (baked apples etc) and with them, it doesnt matter at
CS> all. Most popular knock-down picks for me are kangkoon and bok choy
CS> (not all my bok choy, but a head or so at knock down suits). I'll also
CS> pickup wilting green onions for use in soup if I am making one that
CS> day. Tomatoes here are worse than USA supermarket ones so I stopped
CS> bothering to buy them at all unless canned. Correction, there is one
CS> stall that has them sporadically and they are all awkward looking lumpy
CS> but have good flavor although the color and looks are fairly off <g>.

I wonder if those are related to some I bought a few years ago in a
Danvers supermarket? Joan and I were looking for some tasty tomatoes
for a salad to serve at an Echo picnic, and asked a woman in the
veggie department. She went away and came back with what she called
an "ugly tomato", which was mis-shapen and lumpy, but the samples she
gave us to taste were delicious, so we bought plenty.

CS> I traded back a recipe for 'fried green tomatoes' to them once and they
CS> have been trading back 'fusion japan' versions of that which involve
CS> small amounts of seaweed and sesame seeds mixed with a Japan chile
CS> powder blend and it's both amazingly close and yet delightfully

Sounds like you have good communications going there.

CS> Charlotte and when I get back home months later, find it was too small
 CS> so off it goes.
GJ> Yes, when kids grow in spurts it can catch you out. I sometimes buy
GJ> things for grand-children, and have been told to buy for 2 years ahead
GJ> in age. Then if it doesn't fit at the time, it will later.

CS> True but with only the one, she gets a bit sad if i keep doing that
CS> and she always has to wait so I aim for 'aboutright, perhaps a bit big'
CS> and sometimes get it wrong. Shoes are suddenly easy but will not
CS> remain so. She is almost dead on my foot size right now and can wear
CS> all my shoes. When I go on sea trips and hit a port, I now get her
CS> shoes. I hedge my bets by getting things I could aso enjoy wearing a
CS> bit, like her pink 'mi kitty' shoes (stole'em once already) and a pair
CS> of patchwork quilt looking boots that in design are sortof a cross with
CS> workboots and hiking boots, but in a rain proof plasticy look with side

You might be caught out if her feet stop growing before the rest of
her. Then she will be raiding your shoe collection.

GJ> Hmmm. Walking? You are going to USA, remember? You might find it a
GJ> bit lonely being the only walkers on the street. (Unless I was there.)

GJ> a place where no one walks except from car park to the adjacent shops.
GJ> Some areas develop a reputation as being "not safe" for walking, and
GJ> as a result no one walks, and the empty streets reinforce that
GJ> reputation. Often there are no footpaths, so walkers have to travel

CS> Yes, I am familiar with that. Virginia Beach is not a 'walking city'
CS> much so we are the oddballs there. San Diego was as many used the
CS> trolley to get around so didnt have a car handy except if they had to
CS> drive to the nearest trolley station. NY city is also a walking city
CS> as is parts of the DC 'megopolis'.

Many of those cities which phased out public transport in past years,
to favour the car now regret it, as it is very difficult to fit light
rail and similar systems back into the present road structures of
multi-layered "spaghetti junctions". Japan, otoh, has benefited from
allowing its rail system to develop with the cities. Wellington, NZ
still uses its 50 year old trolley buses, which are my favourite form
of city public transport - quiet and non-polluting.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Spaghetti with Green Tomatoes
 Categories: Pasta, Italian, Eggs, Cheese
      Yield: 1 Servings

      1 lb Green tomatoes
      1 lb Spaghetti
      5 Cloves garlic -- minced
      3 tb Extra-virgin olive oil
           Salt/freshly ground pepper
1/4 c Or more freshly grated
           Parmigiano-Reggiano

Bring water for cooking the pasta to a boil in large pot. Drop in the
tomatoes. Cook for about 15 to 20 seconds. Remove; let cool. Keep
water boiling. Add 2 tablespoons salt and the pasta. As it cooks to
al dente, peel, seed and coarsely chop tomatoes. Heat a skillet, add
the olive oil, and in the oil cook the garlic until just softened and
fragrant. Add tomatoes and increase heat. Cook 3 to 4 minutes or
until the tomatoes start to get soft. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Combine the cooked pasta with the tomato sauce, toss, add Parmesan
  and toss again. Enjoy!
