CS> Well, I think Charlotte will like Guitar but an old style one, not the
CS> electric type. Thats one of thre mistakes in shipping our household
CS> here. I left the old one i got as a college student in the wrong spot
CS> and it got packed to long term stateside storage. oops.

Acoustic guitars are relatively cheap and so would be worth trying as
a beginner's instrument.

CS> I've been looking hard at the little electronic keyboard units that
 CS> are like pianos though.

These can also be fairly cheap, light and compact (and therefore
easily transportable) and very versatile. They also have the
advantage that many can be used with headphones for practicing.

CS> It's my opinion that no one is a fully educated person, without some
CS> level of music training, even if they can barely manage 'twinkle
CS> twinkle little star', its the exposure that is critical. USA schools
CS> kinda drop all music after roughly 3rd grade (age 9) unless you allow
CS> your child to take band or choir instead of studyhall... Hard sciences
 CS> are much more promoted.

Sometimes I wish I had had musical training; I have akways loved
music, and had tried mandolin, but decided I was hopeless and gave it
up and made a hand-cranked gramophone.

GJ> (The third studied drama, which is worse!)
CS> Hehe that was me! But I didnt 'act' after 6th grade. I took to the
CS> techie side of lighting and continued that right through college. I

And look where that skill eventually got you!

CS> was the lighting for my Brother playing Tevvia (fiddler on the roof,
CS> man with a truely possible professional tenor who opted to computer
CS> jobs but at his nightlife, still sings in plays and such). (How the

So there is a musical thread through the family; must be where
Charlotte got it.

CS> Wierdly my own singing voice is too low for alto. I think they have a
 CS> name for it. Bas-alto?

As long as it carries sufficiently when shouting orders in a hurricane...

CS> Little bit on that, which hopefully no one will mind! I had fun with
CS> the CPO Initiation. I can sing *very very badly* when I try. I am
CS> never a good soloist but with practice, am dead on the backgound
CS> 'steady' that you put right between the alto's and bass set. Quietly,
CS> during my Chief Initiation phase we played this up with me being
CS> finally voted 'the worst voice we have heard among 500 chiefs of this
CS> ship'. I carried a little card, 'pay me and i'll stop' and got some
CS> 800$ that way (truely evil I be!).

I feel you take advantage of Ordinary Seamen (or whatever the US Navy
calls the Other Ranks.)!

CS> I ranged from super flat to quivvering ear pain screaches only a 3year
CS> old can normally reproduce. Grin, only choir practice can actually

Don't remind me! (Was subjected to one in a s/market recently).

CS> teach how to do that so well. Had 'em all fooled.

CS> Come actual ceremony with the family there, I and 3 others stood
CS> foreward to sing the Star Spangled Banner. Should have seen the :fear:
CS> some had when they saw :me: there, then they learned 'they had been
CS> had'. We did it barbershop quartet style sort of with me on the low
CS> parts. Got a standing ovation though most of the family didnt
 CS> understand the joke 'revealed'.
GJ> real jobs for a while to earn money. The actor/director/hippy son
GJ> was eased into working as a chef in a Mexican restaurant by the Social
GJ> Security (dole) office, and is at last independently financial.

CS> Smile, happens that way sometimes.

CS> folk music she likes as well as soft jazz. If it's too loud, she'll
CS> listen but not really like it.
 GJ> That is one consolation.

CS> For sure! In fact, she's just 'polite' aboutthe loud music and hates
CS> it worse than I do. She likes the 'idea' of drums, not the sound of
CS> them. Like all kids today, Rap is well known. She doesnt mind it, but
CS> likes it better whe I play the Kingston Trio or Gregorian chant. Yes.
CS> Charlotte likes Gregorian Chant and she's not just being polite about
CS> it. She also likes Rachmaninov (spelling? Phonetics). She says
CS> gregorian chant is like rap in a straight-jacket that is let loose when
 CS> it spirals upwards.
CS> :Hummm: I have a musical kid? Maybe! All sorts of odd things
CS> happen. Lets expose her to more of it and see what develops.

It certainly sounds as if you have a potential musician there; someone
whose talents deserve nurturing. Worth encouraging at this time.
