 Sounds like cherries are on the same schedule as gooseberries, they
 come near the 4th also, depending on the spring weather. Only in the
 last few years have I quite realized that, after hitting several
 conflicts. I used to rely on my postcard notice or the Website to
 figure the right weekends, not really paying attention to the dates.
 Are your gooseberries farmed, or what? My dictionary says they are
 Eurasian, so they must be an introduced item, but might have gone
 wild. I don't know them except by mention, what are they like compared
 to more well-known fruits?

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Cherry Chip Picnic Cookies
 Categories: Cookies, Fruits, Desserts
      Yield: 20 Cookies

      1 c  Butter, softened
      1 c  Sugar
      1 c  Brown sugar
      2    Eggs
  1 1/2 t  Almond extract
    1/2 t  Vanilla extract
  3 1/4 c  Flour
    3/4 t  Salt
      1 t  Baking soda
  1 1/2 c  Fresh sweet cherries, pitted
           -and halved
     12 oz White chocolate chips

     Preheat oven to 375F. In a medium bowl, cream together butter,
  sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, almond
  extract and vanilla. In a separate medium bowl, stir together the
  flour, salt and baking soda; add to butter mixture and stir until
  blended. Press cherries between two paper towels and stir half of
  them into the dough along with the chocolate chips.
     Mound rounded tablespoons of dough onto a lightly greased baking
  sheet; press remaining cherries onto the top. Bake for about 15 to 17
  minutes, or until cookies are set in the center and lightly browned.
  Let cool on rack and store in a container with a loose-fitting lid.
  Makes about 20 large cookies.
