Ärende: kids and fast food
==========================
Hi Carol,

CS> the nearest food place to where we live. Funny thing is the french
CS> fries arent really popular there. Folks get other things, even the

RH> Here we can get a salad as an alternative to fries or onion rings at t

CS> The rice balls are the ones Charlotte likes best. Not sure if i have

Then having fries as a matter of fact will become one thing she won't
care for when you get back to the USA. That's why it's so interesting
over here as Hawaii is such a hybrid Asian/American culture in eating.

CS> described them? It's sticky rice in a handpressed 'sushi' with
CS> 'hidden suprise' (cherry usually, stem sticking out and something
CS> green tied in a bow on the stem). You dip them in sauces or use to sop
CS> up the juice from the burger (mayo and meat juices).

Sounds like it's something American burger laces on Hwaii might try;
actually, I'm surprised they haven't. Right now the alternative kid's
menu (chicken fingers and apple dippers) and the $1. value menu items
are getting the biggest push from McDs.

CS> they can find (imagine indulgent mama-san at side who finding 'wierd
CS> is good' makes normal stuff look really wierd just for them strange
CS> with it's top cut off, soba noodles inside, and a little face
CS> scrunched up in horror (face made of various food things, 'eat my
CS> brains' is what the kids call that one).

RH> That must be fun--reading the descriptions & then seeing how they are
RH> executed (pardon the bad joke). I've not seen that in the noodle plac
RH> over here.

CS> Ah it is fun! The name on the menu for that horrified little bell
CS> pepper is just 'pepper stuffed with noodle' so part of the fun is
CS> finding out what it;s really gonna look like. It's a deliberate humor
CS> in the menu label vice the real name we all use (eat my brains).

And it helps kids develop their adult humor as they realise the double
meaning of some of the names. It stretches their creativity to come up
with their own names that border on gross but don't actually cross the
line.

CS> Sara found a really cute one. 'Egg Salad' was the name. It was a
CS> thick egg salad with green food coloring, shaped to look like a
CS> catapiller with little (seaweed, that red one, oga?) legs, slived
CS> black olives made eye holes with little adzuki beans for the center,
CS> Pimiento for the mouth (it's sticking it's tounge out at you). The
CS> kids call it 'catapillar salad'. It's hiding partly under a leaf of
CS> lettuce with little rice balls tucked like bolders, about the body
and CS> it has this scared little look as it peeks up at you from under
 it's CS> lettuce cover where it's hiding.

As a friend would say, "too cute!". I pesume you're tying to discover
the whole realm of their creations, a bit (or is it bite?) at a time?

CS> The kids get the gory and the adults get cute ones mostly <g>.

RH> I presume the kids have as much fun eating them as they do ordering
RH> them. Reminds me of the time when we were at Fort Hood & had gotten
RH> some gummi worms in the PX. We let the girls dig into the bag on the
RH> way home--big mistake. Deborah was about 5 at the time; she put on a
RH> falsetto "worm voice" and come up with "Oooh, she bit off my head!" an
RH> "Now she's going for my tail, OH NOOOOOOOOOOO!" as she ate hers--as
RH> Steve was trying to keep from laughing so hard he couldn't drive.

CS> Grin, I always laugh when you tell that one! It's so much like

It's just so typical of that girl! She's always been good with younger
kids, even when she was a preschooler. I suspect she would have a flock
around her every time she went out over there.

CS> somethng Charlotte would do! Then again, she's apt to demo that on
CS> our version of a 'fish stick'.

Which the uninitiated would gross out on if they were kids; adults would
not come out and say they were but be thinking along the same lines.
