==========================
Hey Ruth!
->
-> -> -> I never went thru that; the only move my parents made after they
->  hn> landed
-> -> -> in Margaretville was (diagonally) across the street (country road)
from
->
-> -> hn> That may be one of the reasons that Anne and I have not moved
->  hn> since we
-> -> hn> got into this house in 1973. I could not count the moves we made
as
->
-> -> Did she move much as a child? My parents moved from Lancaster NY to
-> -> Margaretville, then 5 years and some months later to the house they're
-> -> in now. OTOH, Steve's family moved several times before he was born,
-> -> They sold that place to one of Steve's brothers in 1995 and moved to
-> -> Florida.
->  hn> ->
-> hn> Anne's family moved from Brooklyn to Long Island when she was
about 8
-> hn> or 9 years old...thats the only move she made as a child.
->
-> I read a statistic that said one out of five Americans move in a given
-> year. I wonder if that factors in military moves, which probably
-> account for the largest number. Very few of my childhood friends moved
-> during our schooling years; we had occaisional transfers in and out but
-> not that many. And, most of my classmates are still in the area.
->
Same with Anne's; mine are scattered to the four corners of the planet!
->
-> -> hn> (grin).The first move Amanda experienced was off to college.
->
-> -> How did he feel about that? Some kids like the adventure of moving,
->
-> hn> We are a very close family and it was tough on her the first
-> hn> year...but she knew that she needed the skills to be "on her own" and
-> hn> she toughed it out and did a great job at school in the meantime.
->
-> I know whan RAcehl got married and moved out, we got a lot of calls
-> asking how to do this or "grandma's recipe for that", I think as an
-> excuse to talk. When Deborah moved out, she stayed near enough by to
-> come over quite often, until we moved over here. Since her deployment
-> and return, she's picked up the phone more frequently to let us know
-> this, that or t'other.
->
We still talk with Amanda often, and happily she enjoys our company almost
as much as we enjoy hers (grin). When she went off to college in Minnesota,
I drove her there...it took three days...on the way back by myself grief
stricken and bawling at my "loss of my baby" (G), it only took me two days!
That first year was certainly rough on Amanda and me and maybe just a tiny
bit less on Anne who turned out to be the "strongest" of the three of us.

-> -> hn> Just remember you never get second chances for those "once in a
-> -> hn> lifetime moments" with kids (or grandkids)!
->  hn> ->
-> -> You're right on that count. I know how our parents felt now when we
-> -> were younger and our girls were growing up--so many times Steve's
mom
->
-> hn> I grew up that way, seeing grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins
in
-> hn> short visits between dad's duty stations. I thought it sucked big time
-> hn> at the time..and still think it's pretty mean to do that to a kid.
->  hn> Sometimes
-> hn> neccesary, but mean none the less.
->
-> Our girls took it as a matter of course, since before Steve went in the
-> Army, we lived in NC and all the rest of the family lived in NY. It was
-> closer, true, so the grandparents came down at least once a year. We
-> tried to get up to NY off and on but it wasn't always possible to do so;
-> in the 8 years before Steve went into the Army, we made it up for
-> Thanksgiving twice an Christmas twice. It's been about that many times
-> since he went in; the last time we were with extended family was
-> Christmas, 1999 because Steve & I had gone up the week before for his
-> parent's 50th anniversary celebration.
->
We took it as a matter of course as well...not like we had any say in the
matter anyway. It was the way it was....but in retrospect I felt that it was
not fair and thusly I didn't do it to my child...didn't beat her either (G). My

perspective is more like your kids than yours. It sucks bigtime to have to
change schools every year, meet new kids who often don't have anything
culturally in common with you, new neighbors, new neighborhoods to get lost
in and beat up in. New bullies, new customs, and rules. Sure there were good
parts and exciting things as well....but all in all it's NOT the best way to
bring
up a child (in MY opinion). You and Steve have been lucky, not as many
moves, not many "remote" tours, and home most of the time...in my 18 years
as a dependent my dad was gone much more than he was home, and we
changed duty stations often as the Air Force needs changed. During the
Berlin Airlift operation I don't think we saw him more than one week out of
every three months. Remote tours and TDY assignments for 3-6 months were
common. (The Airforce has changed quite a bit since those days and it's not
as common as it once was).

-> -> -> sets of parents would consider a place like that for a meal.
->
-> -> hn> Nor mine, but happily we are not our parents in that respect!
->
-> -> I am so glad I don't cook like my mom--to revert to that at this stage
-> -> of my life would be hard. But, she cooks to Dad's tastes and he's very
-> -> unadventerous in eating so........
->
-> hn> ya eats what ya likes most of the time.......
->
-> Yes, and Steve & I like a lot more things than our parents do. Part of
-> it is from our travels, part from living apart from the rest of the
-> family and willing to try various new foods.
->
Anne and I are the same, and we enjoy exploring other ethnic dishes!
->
-> -> hn> Have a good transit and if you get the chance give us an update
->
-> -> Thanks; I'll be around the echo here for about 12 days before we cut
the
-> -> feed. If you send me your e-mail, I can send updates to you. I do
have
->
-> -> rchafflyNOSPAM(at)NOSPAMearthlink(dot)net  FIDO 1:396/45.28
->  hn> ->
-> hn> My email is photohap at the same ISP as yours (LOL) Let the
spambots
->  hn> get that one!
->
-> OK! (G) Steve designed the "signature" for my closer. BTW, a bit of
-> good news--I rescheduled the orthopedic appointment for next Tuesday
-> (22nd) from the 25th. That way, if something more needs to be done with
-> the foot, I'll have a few days of "wiggle room". The receptionist at
-> the clinic said something about "you know it won't be with Dr. (the one
-> that last messed me up" and I told her that I'd rather not be seeing him
-> anyway. (G)
->
I dunno, it'd give you the chance to tell him how much you respect his
medical abilities (grin)!
Take care!
chat with you soon!
