========================================================================
Hiya Ruth!
->
-> -> during our schooling years; we had occaisional transfers in and out but
-> -> not that many. And, most of my classmates are still in the area.
->
-> hn> Same with Anne's; mine are scattered to the four corners of the
->  hn> planet! ->
->
-> Typical of a military kid. (G) To be honest, I not interested in what's
-> become of most of my classmates anyhow. A few, yes, but not even a
-> tenth, I'd say. That would be 6.3 people. (G)
->
Same here, I still live in the town where I graduated high school and I only
see about 3 of my old classmates on any sort of regular basis. I see more of
my old college friends, or even my Navy shipmates (at least I correspond with
them regularly) than my high school classmates.

-> -> hn> year...but she knew that she needed the skills to be "on her own"
and
-> -> hn> she toughed it out and did a great job at school in the meantime.
->
-> -> I know whan Racehl got married and moved out, we got a lot of calls
-> -> asking how to do this or "grandma's recipe for that", I think as an
-> -> excuse to talk. When Deborah moved out, she stayed near enough by
to
-> -> come over quite often, until we moved over here. Since her deployment
-> -> and return, she's picked up the phone more frequently to let us know
-> -> this, that or t'other.
->  hn> ->
-> hn> We still talk with Amanda often, and happily she enjoys our company
-> hn> almost as much as we enjoy hers (grin). When she went off to
college
->
-> It's safe to say the same about our two.
->
Yup we're lucky to have better kids than we were (grin)! At least that's the
case for me!!
->
-> hn> in Minnesota, I drove her there...it took three days...on the way back
-> hn> by myself grief stricken and bawling at my "loss of my baby" (G), it
-> hn> only took me two days! That first year was certainly rough on
Amanda
-> hn> and me and maybe just a tiny bit less on Anne who turned out to be
the
-> hn> "strongest" of the three of us.
->
-> I remember. (G) Be glad you had the phone and internet.
->
Amen and AMEN!!

-> -> hn> short visits between dad's duty stations. I thought it sucked big
time
-> -> hn> at the time..and still think it's pretty mean to do that to a kid.
-> ->  hn> Sometimes
-> -> hn> neccesary, but mean none the less.
->  hn> ->
-> -> Our girls took it as a matter of course, since before Steve went in the
-> -> Army, we lived in NC and all the rest of the family lived in NY. It was
-> -> closer, true, so the grandparents came down at least once a year. We
-> -> tried to get up to NY off and on but it wasn't always possible to do so;
->
-> hn> We took it as a matter of course as well...not like we had any say in
-> hn> the matter anyway. It was the way it was....but in retrospect I felt
-> hn> that it was not fair and thusly I didn't do it to my child...didn't
->
-> Our economic situation changed for the better when Steve went into the
-> Army. Don't know what it would have done or where we would have
-> settled if he'd done the 4 and out of our original plan when he went
-> in. It may not have been the best for the girls in some respects but
-> very good for them in others--they were in on history, first hand as we
-> were stationed in Berlin when the wall came down. The broader world
-> view they have now is a positive result of their being raised in the
-> military.
->
Oh my life was not one of pure unending misery, I certainly did what I could
to make the best of the situation and all in all I think I came out pretty
well.
But when I look at some of the things I missed out on I realize why my views
are the way they are today. Some of my experiences I would not trade for
anything...seeing the Notre Dame Cathedral at dawn for the first time is awe
inspiring, the pyrimids at dawn are breathtaking. Canoeing down the Danube
for a week was an adventure of a lifetime...as was the first time I saw the
Follies Bergere! But I certainly missed the stability of having extended family

nearby during those formative years.

-> hn> beat her either (G). My perspective is more like your kids than yours.
-> hn> It sucks bigtime to have to change schools every year, meet new kids
->  hn> who often don't have anything
-> hn> culturally in common with you, new neighbors, new neighborhoods to
get
-> hn> lost in and beat up in. New bullies, new customs, and rules. Sure
->
->
-> Our girls actually adapted quite well to the changes. The one that may
-> have caused the most problem was the orders Steve had for Fort Lewis
-> after Korea. Deborah was near the end of her junior year; she would
-> have had to move after the school year ended and been in the new school
-> for one year. God had other plans and we stayed in AZ where she
-> finished high school with the class she entered with--some of them were
-> classmates from the last year and half at the middle school on post too.
-> We did have a minor bullying problem when we got to Frankfurt but that
-> was resolved quickly and without repercussion; he and the daughter
-> involved got to be friends. (G)
->
There are always bullies (either physical or emotional) to be dealt with in
life
no matter where you go....but to have to break in a new set every year or so
gets wearisome after a while (grin).

-> hn> there were good parts and exciting things as well....but all in all
-> hn> it's NOT the best way to bring
-> hn> up a child (in MY opinion). You and Steve have been lucky, not as
many
-> hn> moves, not many "remote" tours, and home most of the time...in my
18
-> hn> years as a dependent my dad was gone much more than he was
home, and
->  hn> we
-> hn> changed duty stations often as the Air Force needs changed. During
the
->
-> Different world climate has contributed toward that too.
->
-> hn> Berlin Airlift operation I don't think we saw him more than one week
->
-> I know your feelings about your dad but have you ever asked him to
-> record his experiences with that?
->
Mom has a written record of all those years, so yeah, it's there for posterity
at least in the family.

-> hn> out of every three months. Remote tours and TDY assignments for 3-
6
-> hn> months were common. (The Airforce has changed quite a bit since
those
-> hn> days and it's not as common as it once was).
->
-> True, and the world picture has changed very much also.
->
Boy has it ever!
chat with you soon
