==========================
Hi Carol,

CS> they can show you the items used and you can figure it out.

RH> And sometimes you can figure it out by taste. Steve and I did a prett
RH> good job of figuring out goulash soup in Germany; when we found a cook
RH> book with the recipe, we'd only missed a couple of minor ingredients.

CS> Yes, such is my version of 'Congee' I have posted before. I practiced
CS> several before finally MM'ing one of them (or was it 2?). It's a mild
CS> (as in heat) dish with deep flavors here and I replicate a version
 CS> that suits us.

That "ah ha!" moment when you've figured it all out is worth the effort.

CS> Hey, most folks have a bowl per person here <g>. That one is easy!

RH> Yes, and probably pans (square, like used in baking) aren't as common.

CS> Well, ovens arent common so baking pans kinda are rare. I have seen

True. OTOH, I'm going to enjoy a cooler winter when I can run the oven
from time to time.

CS> square plates though, used at the dinner table. Rather pretty things
CS> though I do not have any as they dont stack with my existing ones
 CS> easily.

They wouldn't stack with mine either but would be nice to have a set
"for pretty". (G)

RH> I was thinking of a larger bowl; probably should have thought of
RH> something more on the soup/cereal bowl size.

CS> That would work. A classic one here is somewhat wider and less deep
CS> than USA ones normally are.

Like maybe the ones that came with our ironstone 30 or so years ago.
Wider and shallower than the ones we got with our Corelle ware.

CS> getting more interested in making simple stuff herself.

RH> Good for her--saves Don from the attacks of the hungry kid when he get
RH> home too. (G)

CS> Oh yeah! And she's set with nuking stuff to rewarm it as well. Like,
CS> I have duty tomorrow (be on the ship til thursday afternoon) and Don
CS> has to work so wont get home til around 9pm. She can take the ribs Don
CS> cooked up today and nuke for 2 mins then check for heat, and nuke
CS> another 2 mins if not hot enough yet. She's got canned spinach in a
CS> tupperware-like dish to make up at the side. Milk for a drink, and
CS> fresh grapes for dessert. I'll make more bread later so she can have
CS> that if she wants as well.

She's all set then.

CS> Yup! He just has to boil some eggs up (or let her do it and help a
CS> bit with lifting the pot from the stove when it's too heavy).

RH> And watch her go to town figuring out differnt spice combinations. (G)

CS> That too! She's not that much into spices for that particular one,
CS> preferring just mayo and maybe a small bit of black pepper from the
CS> grinder. Me, I like green bell pepper and red onion added but we
CS> leave it out and add to the samwich as Charlotte isnt fond of it that
 CS> way.

I was thinking back to Deborah's "interesting" experiments around that
age. She had no idea what went well with what for some of her flavoring
choices and would randomly combine a couple of incompatable ones. It
was a learning experience. (G)
