============================
-> Hum. Actually, Moyer hasn't had much of a season, but he's
-> still probably an asset. Wish the Sox had made a bid on him.
HN> Moyer has pitched for the most part very well this season, but has had
HN> no run support for his efforts...I think he has 8 losses where the M's
HN> scored no runs at all for him this season. If the Sox had made a bid
HN> for him it would not have happened.

I've not seen him pitch this season, but I was of the impression
that he wasn't super sharp for most of the games, and his E.R.A.
was relatively high. This in addition to the W-L.

HN> Last nights game was poorly played by the M's and the Yanks took full
HN> advantage of our flawed play and gave us a trouncing that was even
HN> worse than the 9-2 score indicated.

Well, the Ms did a good job Thursday, for which we thank you.

-> about it, but someone pointed out that before they had metal
-> cooking pots, what did they put on the fire? Just use common
-> sense and don't put a cold clay pot on a roaring flame.
HN> I'd not be so worried about a fire than I would with an electric
HN> element heating the ceramic...I wonder where that sort of primal fear
 HN> comes from?

I dunno. But if you put it on a burner on low and then gradually
increase the flame, then even the most primal of fears should be
extinguished.

-=> Hap Newsom said to Burton Ford <=-
HN> Well the correct context is that PayRod repeatedly said "It's NOT
HN> about money, I want to play for a winning team." (which at that time
HN> the Mariners actually WERE). Then when the offer from the mariners
HN> came it would have made him the highest paid ballplayer in
HN> history....the texas offer then came in
HN> at almost double the mariners offer...and he went to texas

I always wondered how many dollars it would take me to sell
my reputation for. Twenty-four and some beads, perhaps?
No, not really.

HN> it's easy for me to say I would turn it down. But I would have. For
HN> several reasons; First, If I say it's not about money and then prove
HN> that it is all simply about the size of the pile...then I am a liar
HN> and a whore...and being a liar would be the worse of those two

I always maintained that many professions include aspects of
prostitution: since when should it be nastier to sell your body
(perhaps to someone who has little prospect of getting any any
other way) than to sell weapons or your brain (lawyers, etc.)?

HN> appellations. Second, my word is my bond, I don't give it lightly and
HN> when I do I am obligated to honor it, even if it
HN> is to my disadvantage. It has cost me at times, in money, and
HN> opportunities, but I'd rather be an honest poor man than a tainted
HN> Caesar whose word can't be trusted.

You and me both, bro. Circumstances do change at times, but
they don't change so fast that you can renege just at the drop
of a hat. And some of these guys, they go back on their word
so often and so fast that they're spinning like a drill bit.

HN> If I caught a homerun hit by PayRod, I'd throw it back on the
HN> field...and I would not do that for any other player in baseball right
 HN> now.

I'd grant that favor to any of the Bronx Bombers, except
possibly for Johnny Damon (I almost typed "Johnny Depp").

MMMMM----- Recipe via UNREGISTERED Meal-Master (tm) v8.01

      Title: CHICKEN BREASTS MILANO
 Categories: Italian, Poultry
      Yield: 8 servings

      8 Whole chicken breasts, split
1/2 c Olive or vegetable oil
    1/2 c Dry white wine
      2 Cloves garlic, crushed
      1 ts Fresh Italian parsley,
           -chopped
1 ts Dried leaf oregano, crumbled
           Salt
           Pepper
    1/8 ts Crushed red-pepper flakes
           -(or more)
    1/3 c Parmesan cheese, grated
           Fresh spinach leaves,
           -steamed
           Hot cooked rice
           Red bell pepper strips

Mix oil, wine, garlic, parsley, oregano, salt and pepper (to taste).
Marinate chicken in a shallow pan, covered, for several hours or
overnight. Remove chicken and reserve marinade. Place breasts, skin-
side up in 1 or 2 roasting pans; do not crowd. Brush with part of
reserved marinade. Bake in 375 F oven, basting occasionally with
marinade, for 40 minutes until skin is crisp. Sprinkle part of
Parmesan over the chicken and return to oven just until Parmesan
begins to turn golden. Line a warm platter with steamed spinach
leaves, then with rice. Arrange chicken breasts on top and sprinkle
with remaining Parmesan cheese. Garnish with red pepper strips.
(NOTE: Chicken breasts can be grilled about 4 inches from coals for
20 minutes, turning and basting with marinade until chicken is
  golden.)

  Makes 8 servings.
