*** Quoting Glen Jamieson from a message to Carol Shenkenberger ***

GJ> You did (I think) but a different reply, so therefore still
GJ> interesting and worth reading. As I have been swapping between two
GJ> BBSs, I have become somewhat confused.

Easy to do and i have the same problem at times.

GJ> When I return in October, I will expect over 1000 to be waiting.

October? My!

CS> mushrooms, Satsumo Ito (potato type we like), Melon squash (you eat
CS> this squash raw like a fruit), Edamame (Edame here, still dunno why,
CS> just used to it now), mixed 'clams/oysters' for Dad, Japanese Leek
CS> (smaller but works the same per volume and a bit less tough), 'Sasebo

GJ> I think I know those - about half way in size between a European leek
GJ> and a spring onion.

Yes. A bit more 'soft' than a european leek and less soft than a spring onion.
Cooks like a leek. Europeans might find the term 'early leek' of use for this
mild difference. I don't think they are just pulling them earlier, but that
it is a variation as I dont see them bigger later in season?

CS> fish are marinading in miso and olive oil tonight in the fridge and
CS> will be in the rotisserie tomorrow if Don doesnt see them first and
CS> make them in the fry-pan.

We managed to stave Don off <g>. They rotisseried fine!

CS> Charlotte cant really 'cook' yet but she knows the good stuff. The
CS> other kids came back simularily loaded I am told though the items would
CS> be different. The Dads had fun.

GJ> Tell Charlotte "It is time" to cook.

Oh she's working up to it! Right now, the Blue Ridge is in port. They got
driven in by the typhoon too <g>. Shopping at the base is insane just now
(close to 4,000 sailors wandering about in our little town). Thinking about
going out for a bit with Charlotte anyways.

CS> version frozen than what she's managed as of yet.

GJ> Let her practice while you are away, and surprise you (and her
GJ> husband).

She will! She's a dab hand at many things but that one she keeps trying to
reduce to 4-5 ingredients which just doesnt come out the same.

CS> List for her hubby included but wasnt limited to: squid, especially
CS> tentacles, octopus, scallops, shrimp (small dried and fresh ones), long
CS> beans (Carina if you see this, those are very long green beans), pork

GJ> Sometimes called, "Yard-long beans", although usually eaten when half
GJ> that length.

Yes. More tender at that 1/2 stage.

GJ> What do you do with lotus root?

Ohh, tons of things? Mostly I use it like you would a potato except not so
long cooked and made up to look 'pretty' which is dead easy with that one.
Just peel and slice across and it cant help but look pretty. A thin slice in
a soup bowl looks wonderful. In the case of pancit, I cut to 1/2 moon shapes.
I'm also apt to take a jar of beets and warm them separate and then add a
slice at serving time. (Can be cooked with the pancit but then you end up
with pink pancit).

CS> special ceremonial settings and they generally know us 'gaijin' dont
CS> really know the finer aspects so accept what happens as 'polite
 CS> intent'.

GJ> Which is very important in relationships such as that.

<On Bowing in Japan>. Yes. It's a simple thing, much like my southern habit
of the 'nod' or a gentleman 'tipping the hat'.

CS> Try 'bowing' on a bicyle. I can do it but not as well as the locals
CS> can <g>. They understand this.

GJ> Hmmm. That could be a little dangerous in heavy traffic!

Hehe it's done when it's not crossing the road in a danger spot. Just sorta as
you ride along or at a stop. I'm not terribly good at it, but the intent is
all that matters and that's clear to tell even with my skills. Just sorta use
the handlebars and keep your back straight and do a 'pushup' while smiling.

Grin, I remember seeing this my first month here, before I was even back
online. It was entrancing to come to a stop and see the mutual little bows
and join in the fun with my fellow bicylers as we rode in to work. Had my
little yellow raincoat with the 'new driver' car symbol and Barbie-Doll
stickers all over my Cultech bike and glow in the dark beads on the spokes
that clicked up and down as I rode (and made me very visible in the dark).
I'm sure they thought I was crazy, but they liked me anyways!
                                       xxcarol
