Ärende: Grammar
===============
On 08-25-06 MICHAEL LOO Scribbled to DAVE SACERDOTE about CANNIBALISM

ML> DS> I notice many more typos in the newspapers locally than I once
ML> DS> did. I'm not sure whether there are actually more errors, or
ML> DS> whether I'm just a crotchety old grammar nazi these days.

ML>From flyertalk.com

ML> don't want to be banned again on the grounds of nit-picking
ML> with regard to spelling, so I apologise in advance if my
ML> correcting you causes offence, but if you are going to
ML> criticise academics it would perhaps pay to be able to spell.
ML> Of course, academic knowledge has nothing to do with common
ML> sense in business, but it helps business credibility if there
ML> (not 'their') is an academic background. No question. I would
ML> not buy a product from a person who cannot even spell it,
ML> still less if they don't use proper English. Just a little
ML> thought.

ML> Sorry - I know my grammer. Simple error. That's all.

ML> Two points though. First, I was the editor of a nationally
ML> award-winning college newspaper in the U.S. I know my grammer.

AFAIK "grammer" is either an older female whose chirrun have spawned a
succeeding (and sepArate) generation. Or a musician named Billy Grammer
(a one-hit wonder from the 1950s)

Grammar, OTOH, is the rules of the language being used. Bv)=

ML>I responded to this unfortunate (who can't spell, can't use proper
ML>logical thinking, has dubious grammar at times, and "was the editor
ML>of a nationally award-winning college newspaper") later on in the
ML>thread, very temperately and without using the language I wanted to,
ML>which would have gotten me suspended, I thought.

I do hope you managed to spank Mr/Ms "Grammer" properly - even without
blistering the paintwork. Look on it as a pedantic public service. Bv)=

Later - breaking back in ....

Heh heh heh - when I tried to post this my spell checker spit up all
over "grammer" until I told it to ignore the mis-spelling.
