Ärende: old stuff update 224
============================
ML> God, I shudder to think.
DS> Apparently, so did everyone else. That auction garnered several dozen
DS> "hits" but not a single bid; I chucked the box.

You might have done better steaming it open, chucking the contents,
and refitting the box or flattening it. I'd be leery of what was
inside.

DS> No...cucumbers, though, I've found those in plastic bags, forgotten
DS> at the back of the "crisper" for several months. They turn into
DS> big white puddles streaked with green and black.

How about old carrots? Now remember, my father came to this country
under false pretenses (the country's, not his) - he was promised a
scholarship to medical school, but, with the wonderful timing that
has always graced members of the family, he got here just as scads
of returning GIs came back and scooped up all the educational dough
that was lying around (which kind of makes sense - my father was
encouraged to come over to train to help alleviate a shortage of
doctors, but then they came back, and the potential new docs came
back, and he got the short end of the stick). So Dr. Loo, with his
prestigious D.Phil, remained an M.D. wannabe all this life. On his
travels he used to send postcards back addressed to Michael Loo, M.D.
- and it is perhaps no coincidence that my middle initial is D.
I was always embarrassed by this kind of attention and status-
consciousness and grew to loathe it (and him). It is perhaps no
surprise that I did not go on the path he chose for me and that
would probably have been the most painless. Anyhow, he used to
come back with all the medical magazines that were discards from
his colleagues - he was the only senior staff in the department
without an M.D. - so when other kids were reading the Hardy Boys
I was reading the New England Journal of Medicine. The magazines
aimed at clinicians had case studies of various kinds (I was
probably the only kid on earth who could accurately read an EKG
at the age of ten), and the more bizarre ones were accompanied
by photos of various disgusting things. One article in particular
dealt with I believe low blood flow to male organs. [gag] Remember
the joke about sitting around eating Cheetos and watching porn?

And now here's something we think you'll really gag at:

Pasta and Other Complex Carbohydrates are the
Preferred Fuel for the Brain and Body. A
Nutrition Message from the American Dietetic
  Association [from Barilla box label]

Linguine with Clams and Leeks Sauce
Cat: pasta, Tuscan
Servings: 4 to 6

1/3 c extra virgin olive oil, divided
2 c (2 medium) leeks, diced into 1/4" pieces
2 Tb butter
1 clove garlic
3 dozen little neck clams
1 bay leaf
1/2 c white wine
1 lb inguine
2 Tb parsley, chopped
salt
freshly ground black pepper

Linguine con Vongole e Porri

BRING a large pot of water to a boil.

HEAT half of the olive oil in a large skillet over medium
high heat. Add leeks, saute 5 min or until tender. Transfer
to small bowl and set aside.

HEAT remaining olive oil and butter in the same skillet. Add
garlic and saute for 1 min.

ADD clams, wine and bay leaf. Cover and cook until the clams
are completely opened. Discard the shells; save a few for
garnishing if desired. Add leeks.

COOK pasta 2 min under lowest cook time on package. Drain,
reserving 2 c of cooking water.

TOSS pasta with leeks, clams and parsley. Add a few ladles of
cooking water and continue cooking until sauce is thickened
to desired consistency and pasta is al dente. Season with
salt and black pepper to taste.

TRANSFER to a serving platter or bowl and serve.
