GJ> At the time the Iranian airliner took off, the Navy had got an ID from
GJ> IFF from a fighter parked nearby, and so they assumed that it was a
GJ> fighter which was flying towards them, even though it didn't respond
GJ> to any of the military wavelengths. No one got a telescope to look at
GJ> it; apparently not modern naval issue. Bang, splosh! Whoops!

ML> That story doesn't make sense.

It didn't make much sense to me, either, but that is the gist of what
was in the TV cover or that incident.

GJ> I doubt if the Iranian government would sanction that, not even if it
GJ> was pointed towards Tel Aviv. It would be much easier, and just as
GJ> effective if the baddies got a small DC3 or similar, and hedge-hopped
 GJ> to any handy target.

ML> There's far too much room for error with a DC-3. Not that they
ML> weren't great aircraft in their day, rather that their range is
ML> small enough that someone could figure it out as the little thing
 ML> slouched toward Bethlehem.

Depending on how close to Bethlehem it started from. Those things
don't need a hardened, sealed airstrip, but operate quite well from
dirt strips.

ML> Still easier to use land-based bombs, such as a
GJ> bang-filled van set off in a tunnel under Boston or NYC. Or even my

ML> I have always been anxious about the tunnels under Boston or NYC.

I'm sure that many people in your Homeland Defence forces are also
terrified at that prospect.

GJ> favourite, a RPG fired into the underside of your UA flight from a
GJ> backyard under the approach/departure corridor of JFK airport.
ML> An RPG would likely not take out an aircraft. An appropriately
ML> aimed SAM might well do so. I've always wondered why private
ML> weapons trading wasn't squelched severely and rapidly.

If a bit of metal which fell off an American (Continental?) plane
could take out a Concord, I would think that a lucky RPG exploded
against a full fuel tank or under the pilot's seat or on the control
surfaces would do the job quite well. Re your comment on private
weapons trading, could the reason for its continuance be that certain
high officials on your and other governments had fingers in that pie?

BTW, if some of my Cooking friends have sent me emails, and are
waiting for replies now I have returned from E Europe, they may have
to wait a bit longer, as for some reason I can't get my email system
to work. When I have sorted out myself and my belongings, I will
begin posting the results of my research into food and wines of the
regions. I AM SICK OF DUMPLINGS!

      Title: GYPSY PIE [TTT]
 Categories: Game, Pies, Meats

      1 Rabbit, 900g dressed weight
      1 tb Salt
    500 g Blade / stewing steak,
           -without fat or sinew.
      3 tb Flour. plain
    200 g Bacon, rindless,

      2 tb Parsley, freshly chopped
    1/8 ts Thyme, dried
    1/4 ts Black pepper
           Pastry, short crust,
           -frozen or home-made.
      1 Egg,
           -beaten.

On the day ahead, cut the rabbit into 5cm/2inch pieces and soak
overnight with the salt and enough water to cover.

Next day, drain the rabbit, pat dry and put into large plastic bag.

Cut the steak into 2.5cm/1inch cubes. Add to the plastic bag, along
  with the flour, and toss.

Place in a 2 litre pie dish, along with the bacon, beef stock, chopped
parsley, thyme and pepper. Stir well to mix. Cover with pastry, cut to
size. Make a slit in the centre. Glaze with a beaten egg, cover and
cook in a preheated 180^C oven for 3 hours, covering the pastry with
foil if it looks like burning.
