On thinking about it, the ferry company would have saved the cost of a
voyage every day that that occurred.  Sneaky!  Meanwhile, the queue of
trucks and passengers running to the published time-table increases.

He was notoriously weak at resisting their advances.  First wife
shared his other great interest - drinking in pubs.

My own conclusions, also.  Equivalent would have been a lob from the
rear wheels of a truck, but in the absence of a truck, and the
presence of a fence, the above seems more likely.   An indication
would be whether the gouge is oriented directly in line with the car
longitudinal axis, or at a slight angle to it.  If the velocity of the
car was known, and the gouge angle measured carefully,  the
approximate distance of the launcher from the line of travel of the
car could be calculated.

      8 oz Flour
      2 oz Butter
      2    Eggs, beaten
      1 pn Bicarbonate of Soda
      1 pn Baking Powder
      2 oz Dried Fruit (e.g. sultanas,
           Raisins)
      2 oz Sugar
           Little milk (if necessary)
 
  In a large mixing bowl, rub the butter into the flour with your
  fingertips until it is well blended and resembles fine breadcrumbs.
  Add the eggs and remaining ingredients and beat to make a thick
  batter. Heat a griddle or large frying pan until hot. Place spoonfuls
  of the batter mixture onto the hot griddle  and cook on both To serve
