Ärende: A local Cuban Restaurant

  Saturday, Gail and I were out shopping and decided to eat out for
  dinner instead of going home and cooking.  Several months ago, a
  friend had recommended a Cuban restaurant that is about ten miles to
  the south of us in Burtonsville.

  It was well worth going to.   I can't say that I have been to a Cuban
  restaurant since Florida -- and think that was more Spanish than
  Cuban.   It turns out that today, we got the Washington Post magazine
  restaurant review and it has the restaurant in it -- only Cuban one
  listed, and gives it two stars.  They also did a review about a month
  ago, but we had not seen that -- but found it on line.

  The name of the place was Cuba de Ayer.  It is small, unpretentious,
  with perhaps room for 40 people or so.  Also a bit hard to find, but
  very near the intersection of 198 and 29 if you look on a map.  It is
  closed Mondays.

  I had a pork dish and Gail had a beef dish.  Both were very good,
  flavorful with decent spicyness, but not hot spicy.  Here is the quote
  of a paragraph from the Post article that happens to mention the
  dishes we had:

The lechon asado , roast pork, is a classic, marinated in citrus and
caramelized onions; the bistec palomilla , thin-sliced marinated steak
pan-fried with almost equally soft onions, has a subtle tang of vinegar.
The fried (sauteed, not battered) sweet plantains serve as relish,
palate cleanser and dessert all in one; they're so good it's hard to
leave room for even the classic white cheese and guava.

  Gail's beef dish did not have any noticeable taste of vinegar.  She
  had the fried sweet plantains, quite like the ones that Dave Sacerdote
  cooked up for us at the last picnic.   I had battered and fried green
  plantains -- which were good, but essentially fried crispy bits
  without a lot of flavor.   Gail had white rice with black beans in a
  bowl on the side.  I had moros y cristianos which is rice and black
  beans cooked together.  The rice was brown in color and the result was
  drier than the beans over rice.  Both were good.

  Dinner meals were all $12 to $15 (except for a vegetarian platter that
  was $10).

  They have a Cuban sandwich for $6 that sounds quite worth trying.

  As an added bonus, it is just around the corner from an Amish market
  that has pretty good vegetable, cheese, and meat stands (open on
  Thursday, Friday and Saturday only).
