===============================
Hi Carol,

CS> will like edame beans if you find them. (Shell them, the pods arent

RH> We have a bag in our freezer right now. (G) Steve likes them bettr th
RH> I do; they're OK but not chocolate. (G)

CS> Ah, nothing is like Chocolate! Anyways, I use them by the handful in
 CS> all sorts of stuff.

They're basically a snack type munchie for Steve. Something to occupy
his fingers when the brain is zoned out on the tv, most likely. OTOH,
the chocolate is medicne for me. (G)

RH> where you have to seek; it just says that ye will find.

CS> True. Either way, there are still lots of food items i havent tried
CS> yet. What I sincerely hope is that others will just 'try something
CS> new' now and again as i do.

I do now and then but not on every shopping trip. Looks like Steve will
be doing more of those; I've got orders to stay off the foot as much as
possible. It was re-aggrevated (no break but the "old" one is acting up
with a bit of tendonitis) somehow this week; "ran" into Tripler for a
quick check this morning. Found out my PCM had been hanging on to my
records since I saw him last week but they are now back at the records
room.

CS> panko is *rice* so try that on him? Panko isnt made from wheat at

CS> If you see 'rice flour' you pretty much have panko. The brand name
CS> type in Hawaii is in flake shape, not ground down yet finer to a
CS> powder, but same thing. Here, you buy it out of sealed bins (sealed

CS> I have to backtrack on this. Seems from 'google' that Panko is a
CS> wheat based product from flaked bread. What does that mean? It means
 CS> I'm getting
CS> something we locally call 'panko' and cant tell the difference of at
CS> all in looks or flavor but is made of rice. Sasebo-ism? Maybe it
CS> comes in rice format too?

CS> has 5 types. One is a brown rice with a fat flake that tastes
CS> slightly nutty. There's a fine brown rice too and 3 'sizes' of white
CS> type (fine flour to big flake). Once I saw them dip out of the 'big

RH> I've only seen the white rice variety; Steve would go for the brown ri
RH> one if I could find it.

CS> Now what the heck is the right name for the rice type? Google says
CS> I'm all wrong that it's rice based but it is I assure you here. No
 CS> doubt at all.

So maybe panko is a generic name and you would have to specify what kind
you want if you want to be picky.

CS> Here's the funny part about Japan. No 'Asia grocery' who can
CS> translate. Just folks selling things with 'engrish' names and I've
CS> mentioned before that this can be a trial when I try to post a recipe.
CS> I didnt know there was a wheat based bread version until I checked
 CS> Google.

The old "learn something new evry day" policy at work again.

CS> I really hope I'm not using the wrong name! Panko is what I am told
CS> this is bt if i am wrong, then Panko comes from potatoes and still not
CS> 'wheat' while I am getting something so close to it, we all cal it
CS> 'panko' because it *looks* and *cooks* indentical. The local thing I
CS> get is definately from rice, not potato.

So get a native Japanese speaker to clarify. I know several I could
ask.

RH> The common name over here is "Japanese bread crumbs"; that's why I
RH> thought it was a wheat product.

CS> Grin, seems you have the name right and I have another product but you
 CS> cant tell the difference.

Lord only knows----and He ain't a-tellin'!

RH> train to Misawa. She told me that their luggage had to go on a separa
RH> freight train & was hoping it wouldn't get lost; I assured her that it
RH> probably down to a science over there.  We pick them up next Tuesday;
RH> it'll be interesting to hear their tales.

CS> Tell us how it goes when the time comes!

Will do; it's actually Wed.; I looked at the calendar wrong.

CS> Don oaded up some in a little baggie for our next trip to Tonoo. I
CS> plan to show it to the 'panko lady' and see what she can show me.
CS> She's got some 40 bins of 'stuff' there, much of which I havent tried

RH> Better hurry up; time's getting short!

 CS> ;-) Definatley

But you've got longer over there than we do here since you did a COT/PCS
& we just did 2 FSTE's. Our time is up in August.
