Ärende: Saturday night dinner
=============================
Hi 10/29/06 10:59 PM HOPE THIS GOES IN ONE PIECE !!

A week or two ago, while doctoring up near Rochester we drove by a sign
that said "Closing Sale. European Grocery" Of course we turned around
and stopped there. Never heard of it before.

It was a bit like the Russian Store that Dave The Sas took us to during the
'06 Picnic. But not as big. For instance the Deli counter was only eight
feet long instead of 60 or 70 feet long like Dave's Russian store.
[kidding, kidding --- Dave's Russian deli counter was only 50 feet long.]

By the way, Dave, did you ever find out what the heck that stuff was that I
bought at that Store? Still no rush, still curious.

We bought a lot of stuff at the soon to close store, and invited Bowens
over for a Euro-USSR dinner. Had it Saturday night.

Menu [as far as my addled memory can go]

SNACKS" 1.) Little baked "pinwheels" with hazelnut stuffing, Product of
Russia. Very hard and tasty, a little too salty but good. Came in one
of those split wood berry baskets.... do they still make them around the
USA?

2.) Wheat Thins, crackers from USA. Small and tasty.

3.) Dolmades [stuffed grape leaves] from Wegmans, very, very good.

4.) Adriatic Mild Ajvar Veg. Spread. Peppers, eggplant, garlic, etc.
Great dip. Not hot, just mildly so. Product of Bulgaria.

5.) "Snack To The Beer" Product of Lithuania. Beans 51%, onions
20%,etc..
www.viconda.lt Thick, beany, nice on the Wheat Thins.

6.) "High Quality Ukrainian Beer." Obolon Brewery, Kiev, Ukraine. Magnat
Exclusive. 500ml. 5.3% Alcohol. A wheat beer I think. Jake says it's
like a lager. Tasted like beer to me. (sorry, that's all I know about beer
taste.) Nice white head that went away very quickly. The beer itself is
quite yellow. Well received by all.

7.) Obolon Krepkoe Beer. 7.4% alcohol. 500ml. Obolon Brewery, Kiev,
Ukraine.. White Head went away quick. Color golder than the Magnat. I
gave my son Dave a bottle a week ago and he called it skunky. None of us
smelled or tasted anything skunky. Bottle difference? I liked it VERY
much. It too was a Lager, we think.

8.} Ukraine Pop. Carbonated drink. Beautiful Green bubbly drink.
Reviewed before by Dave The Sas. Called Tarkun, which is Russian
Terragon.
Dave said it tasted root beerish if I remember. We all thought it tasted a
bit like cream soda. None of us detected any anise or licorice flavor or
smell. Excellent drink !!!

SUPPER [Dinner to you fancy folk]
1.) Swedish Hill NYS Sparkling Wine. Excellent! Clear, clean bubbly.

2.} Georges Duboeuf Cotes du Rhone 2003. One of my favorites. $5

3.) Adamba Polish Style Red Borsch Soup mix. Product of Poland. Light
body, few small pieces of beets, we think. Added water, boiled and
simmered for 19 minutes. Cooled and served with a dollop of fat free sour
cream.
About 6 oz apiece. We all loved it, not knowing what it <should> taste
like. Ingredients: Beet powder, veg. fat, sugar, salt, citric acid.

4.) Mini-Siberian Pork Pelmeni, 2.2 pounds. Product of Russia. M&P Food
Productions. Frozen, about an inch long, shaped like chinese dumplings
only smaller. Stuffed [small] w/Pork, Onion, salt, dill, black pepper.
Shirley boiled them all, then fried half to a golden brown, and very
lightly fried the other half, even though the info suggested eating them
just plain boiled. I think she didn't like the looks of the boiled ones.
Anyway they were a hit, Plain or Sour creamed, and served with fried
onions. Also splashed with the sauces listed below, as desired.

5.) Wegmans Asian green beans and peppers; Wegmans Tabooula - chopped
parsley with bulghar wheat and diced tomatoes. Beans ok, I liked the
tabooula, very tasty, nice counter to the Pelmeni.

6.) Rothschild Farms Ginger Wasabi Sauce, Ohio. Not very hot, but tasty
on the Pelmeni. Mustard powder was 9th ingredient, Horseradish was the
12th ingredient and Wasabi the 16th of 19 ingredients. I was surprised
there was <any> wasabi.

7.) Hokan Lemon Sauce, Bridgeport, NJ. Dark brown, thin and soupy.
Strong unknown spice flavor. Also was good on the Pelmeni.

8.) Plate dainty: Wrapped choco covered jellylike fruit compote [?] we
decided was apricot flavored. www.konfekt.ru so Russian.

DESSERT
1.) Artur Biscuits with Egg & Brandy. Product of Poland. Bottom layer of
cake, top layer of a thick jelly, all covered with Chocolate. No mention
of Brandy in the ingredients, but it mentions 4.5% alcohol in the 38% of
filling! Fresh impression, cheap chocolate but good enough. The cake
layer was fresh and cakey [g], and the jelly was firm and tasted of lemon
and maybe figs.

2.) Franzeluta Gingerbread with Poppy Cookies. Product of Kishinev,
Moldova. Crisp, fresh and <very> tasty. We all enjoyed these muchly.
We have no idea what "poppy" is -- there were no apparent seeds.

Played Mexican dominoes until 1:00am.

Great "European" Evening. [Mostly Eastern Europe I guess.]
