Small and strong, these fighters; commercial aviation wasn't

Part of it was the interesting aesthetics and efficiencies of
the design, the former for the passengers and onlookers, the
latter for the safety people and the bottom line. I never flew
on it, although at one time Benita had an employee offer to
fly one way on Concorde and the other on a lesser aircraft for
a total of just a few hundred dollars; she offered to cut me in
on this, but I couldn't justify the expense to myself. How times
have changed.

Not much faster, anyhow. The Douglas aircraft was about the
same speed as the current Airbuses and 737s; the 707 a bit
faster than that; and the 727 and 747s faster still (I believe
the design limits are something like .87 and .89 respectively).
The rollback in speed is because recent engineering has focused
on fuel efficiency and noise abatement issues rather than increasing
speed, and anyway much above Mach 0.9 weird things happen.

English muffins
cat: bread
yield: 1 batch

1 Tb dry yeast (1 cake)
1 ts sugar
1/4 c water, lukewarm
3 Tb shortening
2 Tb sugar
1 1/4 ts salt
1/2 c water, boiling
1/2 c evaporated milk
4 c flour
1 egg
cornmeal

Proof yeast with sugar and warm water.

In a bowl, combine shortening, sugar, and salt. Pour boiling water
over, stirring until shortening is melted. Add milk and cool to
lukewarm. Beat in half the flour, then the egg, then the yeast
liquid. Add the rest of the flour to form a stiffish dough.

Knead dough until smooth and satiny. Place dough in greased bowl
and turn over so all surfaces are greased. Cover and let rise
to double, then punch down and let rest 5 min.

Roll out to 1/2" thickness or less and cut into 3"-4" rounds.

Place on a cookie sheet covered with cornmeal, cover, and let
rise to double. Cover an ungreased skillet or frying pan with
a layer of cornmeal. Heat it over medium heat until cornmeal
begins to brown (325F). Place the muffins, top side down, on
the bed of cornmeal and cook slowly, covered, 10 min. Then turn
them over and cook them, covered, another 10 min. Cool on a rack.
