  Others have made some pretty good suggestions and expressions of
  support -- I echo that to you.

  Is it your intent that the program you develop be freeware or a
  commercial product?   There is a big difference in what discussion can
  be allowed in this echo between the two cases.  There is a lot more
  latitude that would be allowed in discussing a freeware product versus
  what could be allowed for a commercial product.

  I agree with the advice that you contact Scott and see if he would now
  be willing to release the source code to you.

  I have been pretty satisfied with MM over the years.   I have also
  tried out (and have on my computer) Qbook and MasterCook.   MasterCook
  is a commercial windows program, Qbook was shareware but no longer has
  much of a presence.

  Before you begin attacking the coding task, I'd recommend that you
  become very familiar with the features of MM and of Qbook.  You'll
  find that they are different in their point of view.  Qbook was very
  much a free form program and those who liked to use it sometimes took
  very liberal use of that free form.   MM is more rigid.  That rigidity
  is a result of having to have things such as ingredients entered into
  a fixed sort of format that could be easily read for things such as
  sorting.

  Here is an example of a Qbook recipe that uses the free form.

Title: Chinese Duck Sauce

  1 lb plums halved and pitted
  1 lb apricots halved and pitted
  1 1/4 cup cider vinegar
  3/4 cup water

     Combine and cook over moderate heat for 5 minutes.  Reduce heat and
simmer uncovered for 15 minutes.

  1 cup cider vinegar
  1 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  1 cup white sugar
  1/2 cup lemon juice

     Combine and boil for 10 minutes.

  1/4 cup chopped ginger
  1 small onion sliced
  1 (or more) serrano, seeded and chopped
  2 small garlic cloves sliced
  4 teaspoons salt
  1 tablespoon mustard seed toasted
  1 cinnammon stick

     Combine the above three sets of ingredients and simmer for 45
minutes.  Remove cinammon.  Puree in food processor.  Return to kettle
and simmer until thick.  Transfer to sterilized mason jar, cap loosly and
let cool.  Tighten caps and let stand in dark at least 2 weeks.

Makes 2 pints.
