The Soviets had this fascination with large planes.
Ekranoplan was perhaps the largest and most interesting
of the lot. I've not seen one - the biggest airplane I
ever encountered was the ADB AN-124. Pictures show a
humongous thing with a large number of engines, skimming
over the Caspian Sea at an altitude of a few feet only;
the specs claim the capability of flying at 7500 m, as well.

I've gone above cruise (witness being Channel 9 and/or the
Airshow) on several occasions. I had a trip a few years ago
that had cardiac emergencies on two consecutive flights
(different people, neither of them me); even an Airbus can
haul buns when it has to. Also have been on 747s and 777s
going over 800 mph (ground speed, wind-aided) in which we
were actually near normal cruise but with winds aloft
approaching 250 mph.

Actually, row 2 was the quietest area. I once flew in one, and
there were only 2 passengers in the front cabin, and they put
both of us in row 2. We were both amused by this and didn't
bother to stake out our own territory later on in the flight
but rather had a smug middle-aged-guys-in-first conversation.

My lifetime stats on the 727 are, since I started keeping
track: row 1 once, row 2 6x, 3 3x, 4 once, 6 4x, 10, 22, 23,
26 once each. Before I started keeping track, I tended to
fly in the first or second row of coach on Eastern and in
random spots on almost empty planes on New York Air - once
flew BOS-ACK on New York Air with no other rider within sight.
New York Air had snack bags on each flight, even that 90-mile
one, with a bagel, tub of cream cheese, large red apple, and
an advertisement for a beer, which you could wave at the
stewardess and get a real one. That might have been a 737.

      Title: Healthier Bagels
 Categories: Kohl, Breads, Kooknet
      Yield: 12 bagels

      2    Envelopes dry yeast
  1 1/2 c  Warm water
      4 c  Unbleached white flour
           - may need 4 1/2 cups
      1    Egg white
      1 tb Water

  Combine yeast and the 1 1/2 cups warm water in a large bowl. Stir to
  dissolve yeast and let sit for 2 to 3 minutes.

  Add flour 1 cup at a time. (The early part of this procedure may be
  done with an electric mixer. When dough starts to become stiff, mix
  remaining flour with wooden spoon.) Knead dough 8 to 10 minutes,
  until it is smooth and elastic. Cover and let rise 30 minutes.

  Divide dough into 12 portions. Roll each piece into a smooth ball.
  Punch a hole in center of dough and shape like a bagel. Cover and let
  rise 20 minutes.

  In a large pot bring 1 gallon of water to a boil. Add 3 to 4 bagels
  at a time and simmer for 5 minutes, turning once. Drain. Beat egg
  white and 1 tablespoon water together lightly. Brush the bagels with
  egg white mixture. Sprinkle on any desired seasonings. Bake in
  preheated 375 degree oven 30 minutes, or until brown.

  Approximate values per bagel: 156 calories, trace fat, 0 mg
  cholesterol, 32 g carbohydrates, 5 mg sodium, 3 percent calories from
  fat
