Things encountered at the family digs

Four flavors of Mrs. Dash:

Extra Spicy - extra spicy indeed; quite hot, the combined
black and red pepper obscuring other flavors, which one is
thankful for, as I find a bit of floor-sweeping quality in
most of these blends.

Table Blend - herbs take a back seat to dried lemon and
orange flavors; also a bit of sugar and heat. Not good.

Chicken Grilling Blend - sweet, citrusy, and then here and
there a zing of rosemary and other long-dried herbs. Only
mildly objectionable.

Garlic and Herb - the dried garlic and the combination of
peppers yield a hot, rather nasty experience. I was surprised.
How could garlic and peppers be bad?

Oddity of the day, one of my mother's blankets is from
"Tennessee Woolen Mills Master Weavers." What do you expect
that it's made of? Answer from the label: "Fleece: 100%
virgin acrylic. Backing: 95% polyester, 5% acrylic." Well then.

Minute Maid high fiber orange juice (some pulp) - how do
you get high fiber and only some pulp, I asked. Turns out
they add loads of maltodextrin, which of course alters
the taste and texture - I noted a muting of flavor and an
odd translucence; all my brother could detect was a slight
thickness of texture; my father, who cannot read the box
and who had no clue what the difference was, said that it
tasted horrible.

Tong San ground nut roll candy - color of a slightly
underdone Fig Newton, so I sort of expected some kind of
pastry with peanuts inside - turns out to be a very flaky
multilayered confection of peanuts, sesame, and sugar;
extremely nice although on the sweet side. Sesame opening
with a good rich roasted peanut flavor and a mixed finish.

Things tasted at Carol's 

Wild avellanas (Chilean hazelnuts)(Trader Joe's) - just
had to taste this new product. Should perhaps have waited
until the picnic, so everyone could have a teaspoonful and
then be done with it forever. Anyhow, they come in halves,
are about half the size of real hazelnuts, and are not all
that delicious. An aroma that reminded me of breakfast
cereal or maybe wheat nuts, very crunchy and with a soynut-
like texture. Flavor not convincingly nutty, not unpleasant,
sweetish, but the aftertaste varied between metallic (like
hazelnuts) to green pond-scummy to downright moldy. And very
persistent - I haven't eaten one in half an hour and this
taste continues with me.

Torrefy Peanut Salty - Fu-Shang-Fu peanut is processed of
choice quality peanut of Sichuan by a traditional roasting
way. With rich protein and vitamin, it tastes crisp and
delicious and suitable salted fragrant. This food is sealed
up to keep fresh and is carried easily. So this food get
customers love. It is a good taste food to entertain
guests and make a present. Quality Guaranteed Period: 10
months. Usage: You can eat after you open it. - Carol's
co-worker Wai gave these to her, saying that they're not
like other peanuts, something about a special roasting
method. To my taste, they're like brine-soaked roasted
peanuts, only perhaps more roasted and not quite so salty
as what I've gotten from Virginia or Georgia. Also, the
quality control isn't so hot - in one handful, there are
hard-crisp and semi-hard peanuts; sweet, bittersweet,
and salty ones, overroasted and underroasted ones. Plus
they're from the mainland, and Wai is from Taiwan, so
what's he doing giving money to those guys?

Dog n Suds root beer - strongish sassafras taste,
gentle aftertaste of sugar, wintergreen. Way too
sweet, though. Remaindered at Big Lots.
