===============================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> sanctimoniously said, if the wine is of better quality, he tends to
GJ> drink too much of it, and that is not good for his health.
ML> I shudder to think what his idea of too much is. As he drinks
ML> to the capacity of his pocketbook, I just have to thank the
ML> deities above that he doesn't have access to unlimited funds.

The other day Kevin revealed that he had 2 mild heart attacks several
years ago, when he was drinking about a litre of red a day, and some
beer. The angiograms showed large partial blockages in arteries, so
he more or less gave up beer, and increased his consumption of dry red
to 2 to 3 litres a day, and the blockages cleared, as revealed in a
later examination. He didn't say how his liver is coping....

GJ> Your picture is excellent. It was the cause of much hilarity,
GJ> "Michael!! Hahaha! Lookitim! A tie, yet! And the long, black hair!
ML> He's seen me with a tie, I believe, chez Cheong. I believe
ML> the hair might have been longer and blacker then as well.

Yes, memories of that occasion helped my recognition. Since buying
new secondhand trousers Kevin has taken to wearing a tie - around his
neck, too, not just to hold his pants up.

 ML> =

GJ> The flavour of extreme pressure additives, as used in gear oil, is
GJ> definitely strong, penetrating, and persistent. Not good.
ML> We're not talking about the brown malodorous machinery lubricants
ML> but the clearish somewhat antifragrant human lubricants. Also
ML> not good, but perhaps not as not good.

Each of us naturally thinks of those lubricants with which he is most
familiar....

ML> Strew it on noodles, for one. Did this most recently last
GJ> In that application a bit of oiliness would be quite acceptable.

 ML> Strewth.

Your Strine is getting better. To get the correct intonation,
remember to keep your lips almost closed. This ensures the sound
mainly comes out of your nose. (It also helps keep the flies out of
your mouth.)

GJ> The local paper has published a list of wines, showing how prices have
GJ> dropped over the last 5 years. Prices given in Aust$$ (= US$0.73).
ML> Thanks for that, most instructive, especially the depth of the
ML> sag at the upper end.

I put that in so that young Jim could read, and weep over the
profiteering government booze monopoly he suffers under.

GJ> As one dealer pointed out, "If you bought a house in Adelaide 5 years
GJ> ago, the price has doubled, but a bottle of Chardonnay is $3 less."
ML> So we all should have bought houses and had five years of
ML> enforced sobriety, followed with an enormous blowout approximately
 ML> now?

Even so. Some of my kids bought houses then, and are now becoming
interested in wine drinking.

GJ> Hmmm. If he had spent all of that windfall at the Festival Wines and
GJ> Food wholesaler, at $2/litre, you would have been correct. Hardly
GJ> more than a drop in the ocean!
ML> I believe that I have not drunk 4000 liters of alcoholic
ML> beverage in my whole life. If one discounts beer, which
ML> hardly counts, that would become a firm assertion. In
ML> my 140-lb youth, I drank (and ate of the flesh of beasts)
 ML> relatively modestly.

In my more athletic youth I weighed less than that, but now stay at
about that level. During the last over half a century I have been
supporting the local wine industry, even at my modest average
consumption rate of a bottle a day, that comes to 14,000 litres.

GJ> Alcohol Free Day. It has been some time since the last AFD, which
GJ> coincided with a complete lack of money.
ML> I have travel-free months, coincidentally coinciding with
 ML> that same condition.

Life can be very unfair!

ML> [written in the business center of the XNA airport, which has
ML> electric outlets and data ports but NOT IN THE SAME AREA]

What brilliant planning! I presume you will pass on your
recommendations to the airport management.

Title: Bistecche Dei Poveri/poor Man's Steaks
 Categories: Italian, Vegetarian, Vegetables, Grill
      Yield: 6 Servings

3 md Eggplants (about 2 pounds)
           Salt
      2 ts Oregano
      2 tb Coarsely chopped fresh
           Mint
    1/2 c Olive oil

In Sicily bistecche like these are served as an antipasto, a
contorno, or, when a charcoal fire is going, as one of many dishes in
  a mixed grill.

Start your outdoor grill Cut the eggplants into lengthwise slices
about 1/4 inch thick.(Throw away the outermost, curved slice, which
is mostly skin. Salt eggplant and let stand. While the eggplants are
standing, mix the olive oil with the oregano and chopped mint leaves.

When the fire is ready, take as many slices as will fit on your grill,
brush them on one side only with the flavored oil, and put them on to
brown oiled-side down. While they are grilling, brush their top
sides with more oil. When done on both sides, remove to a serving
platter, brushing with just a bit more oil, and keep warm until all
the slices are cooked. Serve hot.
