I've _absolutely_ no idea. I've never seen anyone buy them, yet the tray is
always full of peppers in the most perfect condition. More seriously, there
WAS a caribberan shop in Brive, so perhaps there's a smallish antillais
population who buy enough to justify throwing the rest away.

Actually one of the odder bywaters of French culture is that through the
year, you can predict what Mrs average housewife will have in her basket
from the fruit and veg stall with some accuracy, and it will be quite
astonishingly limited in range. But then around Christmas and the New Year,
a HUGE range of exotica appear in the shops and people buy the most bizarre
things, including birds tongue peppers, Scotch bonnet, properly bletted
passion fruit, and even fresh tamarind. God alone knows what they do with
them, I don't certainly. And then once the canonical 12 days of Christmas
are over they quietly subside into normality.

I know them as "rat crap", chillies, but then you were always more polite
and well brung up than I.
